R.J. Umberger's tryout is over. The Stars cut him.
I got a ranch in downtown Dallas/I buy diamonds by the ton/Chase cuties in my Cadillac/Drill oil wells just for fun/But when it comes to boots, I need a deal/That will fit me right, toe to heel/So I get my boots at Western Warehouse.

Not surprising. I was kind of surprised they even signed him for the tryout.

Did you see him out there? Since the NHL only seems to want to show the northeastern teams in the preseason, I haven't seen any of the action.

Wonk and I saw him live the other day. He was abjectly terrible. Just watch his effort on the game winner at the 39 second mark:

Around 30 scouts at the Stars last two pre-season games.

Stars look for turnaround on special teams

"For sure. We're always looking for the pretty play, the open net all the time," Klingberg said. "The PK is not just standing around anymore; it's pressure all the time. It's hard. You have to put the puck through the blockers onto the net and then have at least two or three guys coming into the net, and then one be there before the shot is there. We need to be more dirty there."

"It will be fixed quickly," Hitchcock said of the penalty kill. "I don't want to say it's going to be the easiest, but there will be a dramatic change in the penalty killing immediately because you've got two coaches who know what they are doing on killing penalties. Between [assistant coach] Rick [Wilson] and myself, we have the same belief system, and we'll see a dramatic uptick in the penalty killing right away."

I keep thinking that Nill is going to have to make a trade on D. Maybe even a forward as well. We'll see.

Wait, I thought Honka was safe in the top 6 (along with Oleksiak LOL) and that it was Johns, Nemeth, and Pateryn fighting for the 7th spot?

I just have some gut feel they'll send Honka down. Hopefully it would only be until they trade someone or someone starts the season shitty, but I think he's the one who gets sent down since he is free to do so without waivers.

My gut feeling is that Johns will be shipped out, even though it should be both Nemeth and Pateryn who get das boot.

Yes, Johns would be more valuable. Pateryn and Nemeth won't get you anything, unless another player is included.

Nemeth + Roussel should fetch like a third. Better trade Roussel now before the ref clampdown results in 200 PIMs for him in the first 15 games.

Honka is going back down, making this four seasons in the AHL for Honka.

Didn't he JUST say that it was Nill's problem to decide on the six D?

Seriously? Honka should be playing full-time in the NHL. *f-bomb* Oleksiak.

It is always strange to hear people talk about first time stuff in preseason games because in a week no one will remember any of these firsts.

Honka will probably be the first call-up. Like, maybe within a week.

On the other hand, Oleksiak and Lindell have played really well in preseason, esp. on the PK. Despite giving up 35 PP chances, they only let in 4 goals (and none in the last three games). That's an 88% clip, which would've been the #1 PK in the NHL last season. So that's probably where Hitch has seen the most improvement from Oleksiak and co.

Send him to Robidas island. That involves breaking his leg with a bat right?

Stars mailbag.
Based on play Remi Elie may be the leader in the clubhouse. In fact after RJ Umberger was released from his PTO on Wednesday, Elie was the player that got a stall in the locker room at the practice facility in Frisco.

At the same time Gemel Smith, Jason Dickinson, and Roope Hintz are still forced to use folding chairs in the middle of the locker room.

Elie had a really great shift on the PK Monday, where he brought the puck up, and kept it pinned against the boards behind the Avs net for about 20-30 seconds. Just him versus three Avs. They finally got it back, but the damage had been done.

Ugh.

Well, at we'll have the opportunity to see Honka and Heiskanen break into the league at the same time ...

Stars should ice the best team and if that means Honka should stay up, then he should stay up. Hopefully the D is reduced at some point.
