B Kat wrote:Yeah, that was the start of it. We had a five game points streak going before that. Coaching, players, injuries, leadership or lack thereof, it's gotta be many things that contributed to a downfall that severe, not just Hitch.

The thing I keep seeing is that when the Stars are in a place where they need to amp it up or buckle down, they just fall apart.

The other thing I'm seeing is Hitch being stubborn about his lineup. He won't try the other goalie. He's going all in on his vets when it comes to who plays and who gets the ice time. Hitch is desperately trying to find a win by continuing to do the exact same things he did to see the team lose eight straight.

Kari is going to play out the season. Young guys like Dickinson, Honka, and Smith won't see any opportunities.

For an added twist of the knife, in all eight losses we were either tied or down by one goal in the third.

I think we will see more minutes for Honka and the other kids at this point.

Yeah, we'll see 17 minutes for Honka instead of his normal 15.

So what has really improved this season?
Team's PK (hard not to improve from where they were last season)
Goals Against
Save Percentage (Stars were actually top 5/7 in both GA and Save % last year 5 on 5 under Ruff, October-Early Feb or About 66% of the season.) Mainly with the better PK/PP save % they aren't at the bottom of the league.

Little to no improve
5 on 5 scoring (no reason they should be this low)

What has gotten worse (or still sucks)
Stars take way more penalties this year (team was much better under Ruff)
Team struggles against opponents with speed
Refusal to play younger players
Terrible lineup decisions
Many players are underachieving
Powerplay (hot start especially on the road, garbage for most of the season)
Team's goals against and save percentage has fallen off in February and March just like last season

I was going to say "Well, at least Hitch turned Seguin into a two-way center," but then I realized that Julien did that years ago before Seguin even got here.

Of course when we say “refuses to play young players” what we really mean is Honka. Because Lindell, Shore, and Elie are all young players that got a full season’s worth of games in.

I think we mean guys on their entry level contract.

Lindell is young in NHL experience, but he's also about to turn 24. Not exactly a kid by NHL standards.

To his credit he has played Shore a bunch. Unfortunately Shore does not appear to be a top 6 forward. Elie has played a lot of games, but we all know his potential is limited.

Smith is about to turn 24, and he’s apparently exactly 1 year older than Elie.
Elie is only 3 months older than Dickinson.

It's mainly Honka and Dickinson. Could have at least found out if Dickinson can help out with scoring, instead of playing him limited minutes, giving him a legit shot with consistent minutes... Honka regardless of whether or not he's putting up points helps this team win, he should have had around 20 minutes a night the entire season.

Makes the Stars lack of improvement even worse.

I'll go with Captain Fantastic, who scored one goal and was -3 in that seven-game playoff series.

So today there's this quote.

"For our coach being a defensive coach, he talks a lot about offense," Seguin said. "He stresses puck possession in the offensive zone, and most of what we do in practice is puck possession in the offensive zone. So I hear about our coach being a defensive coach, but I think he's more of an undercover offensive coach. He stresses puck management, and the D getting the puck up into the forwards' hands quickly, and the forwards getting possession in the offensive zone."

Too bad there's no other options better to play then Pateryn.

Coaching decisions and player usage is terrible.
It's also a good thing to put players together who have the same weaknesses.
No difference why all the players are worse at puck possession with Pateryn or Methot on the ice with them.
Same reason why all the players are way better with puck possession, when Honka on the ice, then if he's sitting. Good thing he doesn't play, or plays as few minutes as possible.

...and this guy compares last year's stats to this year for our top offensive players and comes to the conclusion that dump-and-chase is not working:

Why can't they just find some sort of middle ground for god's sake? Quit going to the extremes.

So someone like Julius Honka gets lost in the dump-and-chase shuffle. Despite having more exit success than any other defensemen. Despite the fact that when he’s on the ice against top 10 teams, Dallas is 6-5-2, but are 1-11-1 without him. Despite the fact that Dallas takes 21 percent fewer penalties, and draws 15 percent more. Despite the fact that in the last 10 games against top 10 competition, Dallas has outscored their opponents 16-12 with Honka, but are outscored 20-10 without him. Despite the fact that Dallas has a six percent higher chance of scoring with him, and without him, Dallas’s opponents have a 12 percent higher chance of scoring. Despite the fact that Dallas takes an extra 1.45 penalties per hour in games where Honka is scratched. That last part is kind of a big deal, since their improved power play couldn’t make a difference in their overall special teams performance; a power play that has seen enough lows to keep a unit of Benn, Seguin, Klingberg, Radulov, and Spezza just 18th in the NHL.

Not reading. Comparing a sports failure to the Challenger disaster is bullshit.

And while Honka should be playing, making up stats around games he plays and does not is also bullshit.

Dickinson was sent down, might as well since he's not going to play. Send down Heatherington since he's not going to play either
