What I find troubling is how there are something like five young d-men playing for jobs. A couple of them are playing for their NHL future. And I'm not seeing any of them step up to earn anything or impress at all.

Look at tonight. Johns is on the ice for four goals against, and that's after getting back in the lineup after he was scratched for *poo poo* play a couple of games ago.

Again, it comes down to coaching. If you effed up and were benched for four games, and got to spend those four games watching from the press box while Jordie made that exact same mistake six times a game and yet was rewarded top minutes for it... how would you react when coach finally put you back in? Loose and confident, or grip-the-stick tight and unsure/hesitant?

We'll get a better idea of what these guys are capable of under the new coaches. Provided Nill doesn't Kari up the coaching situation.

The problem is Nill has to decide who to keep based on what he has in front of him now. There aren't enough roster spots for Nill to bring back all 400 d-men to see how they do under better coaching.

Honka should probably only play against teams with no offense.

Yes, our young defensemen are so bad that none of them could make a stronger impression than Jordie.
They're so bad that they can't even distinguish themselves from Pateryn, the new even lower hurdle.
Except for Lindell, he's essentially our #1 defenseman right now.

Lindell's another weird example. He's been horrible. I mean, he's been pretty good offensively, especially for a rookie (and even then Ruff didn't trust him with PP minutes until late). But he can't clear the zone, reacts poorly to zone entries, stares down the puck and loses his guy, turns over the puck repeatedly, etc etc. My any measure you name, he's arguably our worst d-man.

So of course let's make him our #2 guy and gift him a spot next to Klingberg from Game 1. And keep him there the entire season.

I mean, yeah, Lindell WILL get better. But it's one of those things that Ruff stubbornly clings to (see: Eakin/Jordie) that costs the team tons of games. Why not gift Honka with those minutes and PP time? He's an untested AHLer too!

Small wonder that in 19 years of coaching, Ruff has developed all of one d-man in his entire career. It's pretty amazing when you think about it.

As long as they don't bring in any new defenseman like Oduya types they will be fine. Adding in structure, and having the forwards play something resembling a defense, will help out the team's overall team defense, more then adding any defenseman would. So they can become a team where they can put basically any goalie in net, and they'll do good.

Pateryn was a throw in basically, he should be gone. Nemeth doesn't seem to have the puck skills. Eakin hopefully is gone.
They talked about puck possession after Nill took over and when Ruff became the coach, that's what they should focus on. The only way this team is going to become a top team consistently is if they can figure out how to develop their own players at forward and on defense.
Or they can keep acquiring relics like Oduya's, Niemi, Gonchars, etc

On the penalty kill the issue with that is the forwards and defenseman aren't playing as a unit, the forwards can very easily get out of position.

Losing is a valuable learning tool as well.

And though I have faith in the youngsters, I do think we need one more, more veteran D for next year. Hamhuis has been decent enough, but also may be gone in the expansion draft. Oleksiak, Nemeth, Pateryn are not in the plans. Klingberg, Lindell, Johns and Honka are, build on that.

It hasn't even been the good, rape-incest kind of abortion.

No. It's more like the dilation and evacuation kind.

Well then what the *f-bomb* was the point of keeping Oleksiak, etc., psat the point when they had any trade value?

He's the kid we got for Oduya. Former 1st rounder, big body, scores a little bit.

Oh, that's right. The defender who can't defend. Just like all of the others.

I'm choosing to miss the final game of the season on Saturday in favour of watching the UFC 210 prelims.
This season contained the most number of Stars games that I've missed since the pre-Internet days.

Same here. I probably missed more this season than the past eight combined.

Also, UFC's numbering system is stupid.

Same with me. In fact, I literally missed not one single game from 1995 until this year. I just got so pissed off that I stopped watching in protest.
