I haven't been paying attention since like game 10 of the season.

The pundits pundificate but in reality the complexity also hinders actual movement, protected players, salary cap, the actual draft, etc. I think it's still interesting and fun. Plus with Dallas having the #3 pick, that's freaking awesome. This is the most fun hockey has been all season.

I'm with Down Goes Brown - it has nothing to do with complexity and everything to do with most GM's being giant pansies who would rather make excuses than trades. It's worth noting that both the Penguins and the Predators are active traders who made multiple high-profile trades.

I would like to be the first to declare that Heiskanen is a bust.

EDIT: What Troy said.

It's too bad Vegas can't announce their garbage trades yet.

Makar vs Heiskanen

In favor of Heiskanen

"At 17 years old he's playing against guys who are 35 and who have been around for 20 years so that gives him an extra advantage. You don't play in Liiga if you're not good enough to do that and he was unbelievable there. He's a very good skater, both forward and backward. His hockey sense is really good. He's not a big, strong guy but always in the right position at the right time. He can shoot and is an excellent playmaker. He loves to join the offensive rush."

"They are both excellent skaters, and can both can create offensively. But defensively, the experience Heiskanen has from playing good minutes against men this past season in Finland's top league has his overall development ahead of Makar for me."

"Heiskanen is No. 1 on my list. He's a Scott Niedermayer, a generational-type guy. The game is easy for him. The way he skates, the way he makes plays."

Nill told Shapiro the Stars have 4 players they like at #3. It seems as those four are Heiskanen, Hischier, Makar, and Patrick.

Any one of those four would be more than acceptable.

The Stars in 2003 (I think considered by most to be the deepest draft in history) were pretty awful. I think the only player we really got out of it was Eriksson.

That was at the height of the "trade down" Army days, though.

In 2002 we had 5 picks in the first 43 and came away with Daley and nothing else (that was the Martin Vagner draft). In 2006 we had five picks, the most accomplished being Richard Bachman (that was the Vishnevskiy draft). 2008 we got Phillip Larsen (no #1 that year) and not one NHL shift from anyone else.

Not surprisingly, the years following those drafts were when we were shut out of the playoffs.

Overall, tho, we're above average at drafting. Only about 12-15 players in any draft ever make it to 800 NHL games, so if you get even one you're already ahead of the curve.

On Patrick (injury problems) or Hischer dropping to #3)
It’s highly possible, because we are talking about one team’s preference and not an actual draft ranking.

The New Jersey Devils have the No. 1 pick and they are very high on Makar, so if he goes No. 1 it shouldn’t be a shock.

Trading #3
There are lots of players, too many to list in fact. But the type of players the Stars are hoping for likely isn’t available, meaning Dallas will likely hold onto the No. 3 pick.

Jeff Marek (Sportsnet) thinks the Stars will take Heiskanen. He has heard rumors of defenseman Cale Makar potentially going #1 to the Devils.

If Makar goes to New Jersey, I would be more in favor of taking whichever of Patrick or Hischier falls.

Bob McKenzie said last week teams are concerned over sports hernia and groin surgeries. Patrick has had two of them already..

I get that, but it's a risk that's well worth the potential upside if he's available.
I'm high as *f-bomb* on Heiskanen, but you gotta go for Hischier or Patrick if you can.
Or maybe you don't. I'm sick of talking about it. Just do the damn draft already.

There's rumors Vegas loves Patrick.

Just looking at scouting reports, Hischiner and Heiskanen probably are the best assets to a team. If both were gone by the #3rd pick I would trade back with someone who loves Patrick, because there's no guarantee he'll better then another center like Cody Glass or Vilardi. Plus you're getting another piece out of it.

I'm stoked AF.

Best case scenario: we get Nico
Worst case: we get Tanev

Dreger said he doesn't think Vegas will be able to the 3rd overall pick from the Stars. Would be interesting to know what they're offering, if it's 6+ another 1st.
Seems as Vegas wants the Stars pick to flip to NJ for #1.

McKenzie made it sound like Heiskanen and Makar will go 3/4 just not sure of order.

Pierre MaGuire genius:

"The only way New Jersey doesn't take Hischier is if they trade away the number one pick ..."

Flashing the trade news thing on the bottom of the screen just now made my heart jump.
