So am I to assume the Stars will trade the #3 pick? Perhaps they can package one of the goalies with it in a deal.

We should trade it for a few 2nd round picks. We need more pesky grinders on the 4th line.

A scout who works for McKeen's who, regularly talks to NHL scouts.
Miro Heiskanen

Grant McCagg
Heiskanen is in the discussion as the best draft-eligible defenceman since Doughty/Karlsson along with Hedman...three different scouts opined to me today that he may well be #1 in the draft..that's how good this kid is....I've had him top five in my rankings since I launched my website Feb. 18...and he has more than justified that with his U18 performance. The only question remaining going into this was how much offensive upside he has..and he's answered that affirmatively needless to say.

As one scout just texted to me from Slovakia - he's much better than Ekblad was, and ..."Heiskanen is a star."

He was their best defenceman by the end of the year. His smarts/poise/mobility are at another level....certainly, brings back some memories of Lidstrom.

a 17-year-old playing PP and PK on a playoff contender in the FEL who was rated in the top 5 of every NHL scout I consulted.

Nill mentioned he was going to attend the Under-18s

Grant McCagg has a mock draft out (Not sure how often it changes)
#1 Devils Heiskanen
#2 Flyers Nico Hischier
#3 Stars Nolan Patrick

On the other hand, without Kari we'd be drafting 26th this season.

I'd be stoked with any one of the top three kids. They're all about equally awesome, with the Finnish D making the biggest rise over the course of the season.

#3 overall + Kari to Arizona for Pronger and Datsyuk.

For those not familiar with how the lottery works, each team is assigned a certain amount of random four-number combinations. The lottery machine spits out four numbers that are then matched with the random combinations to determine which team picks first overall. The same process is then repeated to determine who picks second and third.

I'm enjoying the fact that almost all the tanking teams and Vegas got royally hosed.

And by "royally hosed," I of course mean "will probably get about the same value player they would have gotten anyways."

On paper he does, but I don't remember either of those guys being given that kind of praise. And although it's definitely hyperbole, reading "The best draft eligible d-man since Doughty/Karlsson/Hedman" made it move a little.

But we're both on the same page of draft the best d-man available.

Or maybe even package the pick in a trade for an established d-man.

Heiskanen could just be a flash in the pan, tho. No one was saying these Doughty/Karlsson/Ekblad things about him two months ago, when he was around the 10th or so pick.

So hopefully Philly believes the hype and we get either Nolan or Nico. 'Cause then it WOULD be like we won first overall.

I just mean all three play the right side are highly skilled and are a bit undersized. My guess is drafting him would mean a trade of Klingberg or Honka in the next few seasons.

But there's no doubt he's getting a lot of love. My favorite part of the talk about him is how he is good at the whole defending thing. Very different from Klingberg, Oleksiak, or Honka who all entered the draft with that as their biggest weakness.

Here's an interesting wrinkle:

With a July 18 birthdate, the Finnish defenseman won’t turn 18 until after the draft this season. That makes him one of the younger players available in the draft. He is under contract with his Liiga team, HIFK, for two more seasons. There are some options for him coming to North America though. He can buy out his contract or convince HIFK to loan him. If he were to do so, he could either report directly to the AHL or play in the CHL. If he does not get out of his contract, he could also remain in Finland over the next two seasons and come to the AHL when he turns 20 years old.

Gotta love the non complicated North American leap to the majors.

How did Philly end up moving up 11 spots though?

LOL

NHL.com has posted three mock drafts and all three "experts" have the Stars picking someone different at #3:

Mittelstadt, Vilardi, and Heiskanen ...

There's so little seperating #s 3-7 or so, that it might even be smart for Nill to trade down to a team like the Canucks or Avs, if they got a guy they're zeroing in on (and considering they're both badly mismanaged and smarting from their draft lottery loss). Might even get an extra #2 or something out of it.

This is going to be weird. I don't think I can ever recall the Stars having this high a pick since I was a fan of the team. I suddenly am actually reading stuff about the top players in the draft.

It also turns out that not properly tanking at the end didn't really hurt us, so great.

I credit Nill's excellent GM skills for getting us the #3 pick.

The next highest in Dallas Stars history was #5 in 1996. We picked Richard Jackman......

I also didn't realize that Derian Hatcher and Richard Matvichuk were selected by the North Stars at number 8 in consecutive years. One of those turned out to be pretty good at least.

Last time we had a top-3 pick was 1988, but we blew it on Modano.

Iginla was a top 5 pick as well, wasn't he? The jury is still out on him though.

For all the brilliant moves Bob Gainey made over the years, it still baffles me how he did not take the Flames up on the offer to trade Todd Harvey for Joe Nieuwendyk instead of Iginla.

Even by that point, it was kind of obvious that Harvey wasn't going to produce like he did in juniors.

You guys know we aren't picking a defenseman, right? According to Nill, our defense is perfect and set for years. Why else would he just keep 8 defenseman up all year?
