But he's a better goaltender than Kari. So there's that.

I'm a better goaltender than Kari so that isn't saying much.

Stars scouting director

"I feel the draft is a little deeper from other years," McDonnell said. "I think the top 15 to 20 picks are interchangeable and it might be a case of the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The combine is a tool we'll use to our advantage, for sure. I like sizing the player up face-to-face, trying to figure out the player's character. But the latter is very difficult if not impossible. If we could figure that out in an 18-year-old player or person, life would be a little less complicated."

Are uh, are all scouts that philosophical or is it just our weirdos?

This is silly. Every team wants to move up. When's the last time a high draft pick was actually traded?

Prior to the 2015-2016 season Heiskanen was listed at 5'9, now he's almost 6'1

Stars mailbag
1. A one-for-one deal for a roster player that will make the Stars better next season. This will likely be a player still in their early or mid-20s (so not a player past their prime). I don’t know if it would net you a so-called elite player (those don’t move easily), but it could bring back a very good piece.

2. Packaging the No. 3 pick and a current player (maybe Cody Eakin or one of the goalies) to move back within the top 10 and get roster player for next season. I think this is highly likely, because one prospect the Stars are very high on projects more in the five through 10 range than the top three.

The Stars are high on Cale Makar, I don’t know if he’s top-three pick worthy. But he could be the player Dallas picks if they trade back within the top-10 selections.

What's with all the suggestions that the Stars are going trade the 3rd overall pick just to dump Niemi's contract, or that they are going to trade for Tanev? Niemi's contract is easily bought out for minimal cap impact, and I've never even heard of Tanev. Is he any good? We need a top-pair left defenseman, and guess what, there just happens to be one available at the draft! Would Tanev be better than Heiskanen?

Writers have clicks to attract, and the Stars are easy to discuss because they have some obvious moves to make.

Yeah, there is absolutely nothing special about Tanev. No idea what planet these writers are on. He's just a younger, less offensively gifted Hamhuis.

This guy might still be available with our #29 pick (provided we don't trade it for Ovechkin):

It would be a pretty bold move to pass when we are called at #29.

Thing is: developing hockey skill takes a lifetime of practice. Getting jacked takes a couple of months for a serious and professional athlete.

I wouldn't be that concerned about it.

Sam Bennett (#4 overall a few years back) also couldn't do a single pullup, and he seems to have turned out pretty ok.

Some potential draft sleepers here. These are all guys who have already been passed on in previous drafts... mostly because of their height, it seems:

We don't need to worry about sleepers because we are drafting 3rd!

Jake Oettinger was one of the prospects Dallas had extended meetings with before the NHL Draft Combine.

From my observation Oettinger has the best chance to succeed of any goalie in this draft. Personally I look at his combination of size, positioning, and his mental approach as three pillars that could turn him into a successful NHL goalie.

Heika chat.
I think they are looking to possibly make a deal with the 29th overall (and possibly the 39th) and some other assets, and try to add a young defenseman and keep the third overall.

The more they look at the top of this draft, the more they like it.

Good. Use the pick to draft high end talent.

Tanev is about as high-end as it gets. If he doubles his points, he may even become the next Jordie Benn.

That's the thing. I'm not excited about the idea of trading the pick all to get some other team's third best defender. Every NHL writer is dreaming up those kinds of trades because their lives are more fun when GMs make trades, but I'll keep the pick.

And this is from the guy who usually puts little stock in the value of magic beans.
