2017 Trade Deadline GDT - March 1st

Postby Troy McClure » Mon Feb 20, 2017 7:48 pm

It's at 2 pm central.

The first trade deadline type deal happened.

Arizona sent pending UFA Michael Stone to Calgary for a 3rd round pick. If Stone signs an extension with Calgary, Arizona gets a 5th round pick next season. Arizona is retaining half of Stone's salary.

Overall, pretty minor deal with next to nothing given up.

I hope we fire everybody and trade the team to Russia.

As of today, we've got a 2% chance of making the playoffs, a 10% chance of winning the #1 overall pick.

Let's load up on short-term rentals and make a run for the 8th seed!

Just as long as we miss it by a single point in overtime in the final game of the season.

So what's up with Oduya? Is he going to be healthy enough to trade at the deadline?

I hope so. Maybe we can package him and Johns for Daley.

He should be fine in time for Spring, so let's hope that a team making a push grabs him and then just barely misses out on making the playoffs LOL. No Oduya for anyone.

So one potential wrinkle to any trades is that the Vegas Knights can blackmail teams into not selecting certain players:

I continually see fans and hockey writers overthinking the expansion draft. It leads to some pretty dumb ideas like a playoff team trading a quality player for next to nothing at the deadline. Any GM who does that should be fired on the spot.

So, IF Ben Bishop gets traded in the next week or so --and c'mon, he totally will-- it will be the third time in six years he's been a deadline rental.

OR, the V-Nites' final check to the NHL won't clear in time for them to make deals at the deadline:

Eaves has been overdue to get injured. This article just put the nail in his coffin for next game.

Scratch his ass then. It's not like we actually want to win games at this point. Scratch him until you trade him.

Yeah, three games is a big risk with Eaves.

Exactly how does trading Eaves improve the team?

Do you think he is going to re-sign with the team in the off-season?

We can get a high draft pick for him, which we can then use to draft a 20-goal scoring winger for the top line. You know how much we've always wanted one of those!

He re-signed last year, so he seems to like it here well enough. I don't know that there's going to be lots of better options in the off-season, so why not lock him down now?

Patrick Sharp I'd probably trade. At age 35 he's not likely to improve next year and he's relatively expensive.

Eaves is the only valuable trade piece that you have. Nichushkin is gone. You'd be selling Eakin at negative value right now. Nobody is going to give you much for 15 games of a scrambled-brain Sharp. Hudler has negative value. Oduya hasn't played in two months.

At the same time, tho, the loser point has ensured that 90% of the league is a "buyer." There are, what, five sellers? Avs, Yotes, us, Devils, and Sabres? Maybe Tampa?

That alone should drive the prices up.

I'd be okay with a trade and then re-sign in the off-season, assuming that we actually become a competitive team again over the summer. Totally pointless if we're just going to roll out the same garbage again next year to save a few bucks.

Most likely, it doesn't. Most deadline deals return late first round to fourth round type draft picks. The odds of those picks working out is low. It means Nill's chances of finding a quality NHLer in the mid-rounds goes from something like 17% to 20% when the extra pick(s) from trading Eaves get added, and we won't know if the deal even helps the team until 2020 if we're lucky.

But deadline deals aren't about helping the team. They're about selling fans of pathetic teams a temporary dose of hope.

Jordie and Roussel both should be traded, but won't be.

Friedman mentioned some teams are concerned over Oduya's ankle, others are not.

Eaves has been a bright spot in my eyes. I don't consider him part of the problem.

Some of the other forwards should be gone, though. Eakin, Roussel, Korpikoski, Hudler....I'm even okay with Spezza leaving at this point.

Oduya should be gone, Hamhuis should be gone. Both goaltenders should be gone. That's the garbage I'm talking about. Oh and Hemsky. Why are we paying that dude to sit on his ass?

Pens acquire Ron Hainsey from the Hurricanes.
Dude is 35, has played 15 seasons and has not once made the playoffs LOL.
Good for him.
