New coach discussion

Postby Jason » Sun Jan 29, 2017 1:43 am

It is surprising that he has lasted this long, but Dallas Stars coach Lindy Ruff will be fired if the team does not make the playoffs, a high ranking official within the organization said.

“He’s got to win,” the official said. “You can’t fire the other 23 guys.”

In his fourth season with Dallas, Ruff has one year and $2 million remaining on his contract.

Maybe the Stars can hire a real assistant coach for the defenseman and another assistant who can do the special teams (PK/PP). Patrick runs the PK and coaches the defenseman.

I don't think there is anything special about who is responsible for what duty. This just comes down to the current person not being able to get it done with these players.
I got a ranch in downtown Dallas/I buy diamonds by the ton/Chase cuties in my Cadillac/Drill oil wells just for fun/But when it comes to boots, I need a deal/That will fit me right, toe to heel/So I get my boots at Western Warehouse.

Frazer has never, ever, ever gotten it done with any players. There is absolutely no reason to keep him on. None.

Ruff's contract is up after this season. If he doesn't produce, well... sorry, buddy. Don't let the door hit you where the good lord split you.

Why not fire him now and see if it saves the season?

Don't disagree that he won't be back if they don't make the playoffs, but technically he wouldn't be fired since his contract is up this year. He just won't be brought back (semantics, I know). What that does mean, though, is it doesn't cost Gaglardi any money.

This team would be just as bad with Bishop in net.

Well at least it would have shown us that management at least tried to fix the problem.

They should have given the Flames one of the goalies, preferable Niemi.

I still can't get over the fact that there are goalies in the league currently doing worse than our two

It's impressive how the team's save percentage can be 5th (entering tonight) in the NHL at 5 on 5 play but overall they're 27th, thanks to the awful save percentage and team's play defensively on special teams and 3 on 3 OT.

They should have allowed the Flames to take Niemi. There was little point in buying out like Niemi and being stuck with his cap hit for 4 years.

Well, I'd bet Bishop's asking price is way the *f-bomb* down after the Kari-esque year he's had.

Then again, we could just get him for free as a UFA this summer too. Write off this season, take the #4 pick (there's a Spezza clone who should be available there), and re-rack for next season.

Not that I dislike him, but I've never really warmed up to Ruff. And his days are numbered. So I've been thinking about which coach would be available and have settled on two. Gerard Gallant and Paul MacLean (currently an assistant in Anaheim), both have ties to Detroit and therefore Nill. I'm marking it down. :)

Kirk Muller, if we can't get Julian.

Julian is my favorite pick. Muller has a great hockey mind. So, I wouldn't mind giving him a shot either.

No to Julien, no to Muller. I think we should go with the Kurt Russell Herb Brooks.

Maybe the team needs a coach like Julien, but I don't really like him. And today's babies need a player's coach, and or a calming dog. ;)

Muller might be OK, but I figure there has to be a connection with Nill. Not sure how closely their paths have crossed.

Paul MacLean would also be an upgrade in the coaching stache department.

Y'alls thoughts on Bob Hartley?

All the names that have been thrown out in this thread rate a firm "meh" to me. Which I guess is an upgrade. Whatever.

Julian's putting together an unbelievable season right now. His GM gave him a defense of Chara, Torey Krug (who can't play defense), and 4 AHLers. He also has some of the shittiest bottom-6 forwards in hockey (also courtesy his last two GMs).

So, faced with a huge dearth of talent, Julian decided to change up the way the Bruins play: they've gone away from the heavy forechecking half-court style they've played for almost a decade, to an extreme up-tempo aggressive puck-up-the-ice-with-possession style to mask his team's deficiencies. And it's worked (kinda)! They're the #1 team in possession (mark of a great coach), even if their shooting percentage is bottom-three (mark of a lack of talent and/or luck).

Compare that to Ruff: all the same problems that plagued this team in November are plaguing them now. That's the mark of a shitty coach, or maybe, a decent coach who just doesn't give a *poo poo*. Both coaches are on the hot seat, but only one is working his ass off trying to win games. The other one is starting Eakin and Jordie on the PK.

The special teams need a complete overhaul, Muller might be one of the best options. Besides the special teams, the more important role will be coaching the team's defensive zone coverage and developing the defenseman.

Stars on pace to have the worst PK in the salary cap era. That includes about a dozen teams that were actively trying to lose every game.

Ok, scratch that. This year's PK is actually tied with the 14-win 1993-94 Ottawa Senators for second-worst in NHL history:

Going back to 1917.
