Try to look past the fact that he identifies Jamie Benn as the Stars' number one center here:

I don't get why everyone is calling the Stars a wild card team at best. The Stars now are better than they were on paper 2 years ago. If it weren't for the Preds, I'd peg the Stars as conference champs again. No way the Stars are a wild card team at best.

The central is tough. And I don't like the high expectations. Bishop had a rough year last year. He'll be an improvement over Lehtonen, but he may not be the savior we are hoping he will be. Methot appears to be a very nice player...when playing next to Karlsson. I'm not sure he's a guarantee to be a success here. And even if Methot is good, you're still returning at least five defensemen from one of the worst defenses in the history of the league. Radulov was great last year...when it was a contract year. Now that he has been handed a fat five year deal, we'll see if he maintains that work rate. He wouldn't be the first Russian to slack off after signing a big contract. Hanzal is an upgrade over Eakin, but I'm not sure why people have him penciled in as a second liner. His career high is like 40 points. Janmark's leg might not even work. The lower lines are largely unchanged on a team with a PK that was one of the worst in the entire history of the NHL. Hitch may or may not be the right fit here. We haven't hit on a coaching hire since Tippett.

While we had about the best offseason you could possibly hope for, I think there are still a lot of question marks. I'm cautiously optimistic, but I'll need to see them prove it to me before I'm ready to call this group top tier.

Most of those are just people's predictions who know very little about the team they would be shocked to learn the Stars were top 5 in goals against and save percentage at even strength for about 70% of last season. They just look at the overall numbers, due to the team's horrible save percentages/GAA's on PK, 3 on 3 OT, SHG's allowed and see "oh this is team sucks at defense."
There are others in the wait and see mode about the Stars.

The fact Vegas has the Stars as the third best odds for winning the Cup, is a far better indicator then any actual prediction.

But the major problem was a team save percentage of .815 in shorthanded situations, the worst in the League, according to Natural Stat Trick.
Bishop's .897 career shorthanded save percentage ranks fifth among the 65 active NHL goalies who have played at least 50 games.

I feel like this team is going to be even slower than last year.

Stars will be faster then last season.
Removed from the team's roster
Oduya, Jordie, Eakin, Eaves, Sharp, Hemsky.

Added in place
Honka, Methot, Hanzal, Radulov, Pitlick.

Methot and Hanzal, are the biggest two, but they rely far more on positioning.
Methot in 17-18 isn't going to be worse then what Oduya's skating was in his final season with the Stars. I can't say it won't change for 18-19 in Methot's second year, as that's a huge concern with players of that style, but I think he'll adjust better then Oduya, as he's a better player. It'll be easier to mask Methot's skating ability if it starts being a issue being paired with Honka or Klingberg.

Honka being promoted he's a much better skater then anyone lost from last season. Pitlick same thing.

It's going to be more of a puck possession detailed team going forward.

It would take like 10-12 injuries to key players for them to be as bad as last season.

Not ruling that out.

The Stars would do well to remember last season. Big hopes, poor defensive play. And while the roster is much improved on paper, winning still requires putting in the work. Defense/goaltending, even for the past two seasons has been poor. Hitchcock should help, if the players don't tune him out too quickly.

It's hockey. The truth is there is just no way to know. Some random teams will come out of nowhere. Some teams that look good on paper will suck.

That's true. Half our lineup could be out with injuries by game 3 too. Some of last season can be blamed on injuries.

I like how Jay has Honka penciled in on the team when we all know he'll be down in Austin so Nill can keep 11 defensemen up on the team and not have to fear waivers.

Stars mailbag
When Erik Karlsson suffered the same type of Achilles injury that Seguin did, it took him about a full year to regain that same level of explosiveness. Same thing with Benn (obviously with a different injury). You could tell that something wasn’t quite right with him last year.

Yeah. I could really tell when I was at the arena as opposed to TV. His body language was off and he was slow. He couldn't turn very well.

And if he can't turn then there goes his telegraphed slapper on the PP.
