So, I think the GAR analysis probably looks at the end of season Stars vs. the current Stars. Not the Stars with our primary goal scorer and best player, Patrick Eaves. So it might be flawed.

The Dark Wind re-signed to a 1-year 2-way contract.

Last one left to sign is Big Rig with $768,333 left in cap space.

Nill radio interview Tuesday recap
Nill talks about the acquired players. A lot of info.

Nill on Honka
“It’s definitely time for Julius,” confirmed Nill. “He went over to the world championships and played very well for Finland. He’s put in his time down in the minors. We brought him up two or three times last year. He played very well. When he was in the lineup our puck possession time really went up. So we’re looking forward to him making that next step.”

Nill on Radulov and the five year term.
“Not a lot of debate,” said Nill. “First of all, we know who he is as a player. He’s a high-end, high-skill player. There’s a physical element to his game down low. He can hold onto pucks. He drives the net. He’s just turning 31, and when you look at a player’s skill level, how they look after themselves nowadays, we weren’t too worried about the five-year deal.

“So in the end – there’s always risk with any contract – but in the end the five years wasn’t a big concern for us. It’s hard to find those type of guys on the market, and when he wanted to come to us it kind of made it more realistic for us.”

I'm not sure why so many people are freaking out about the 5-year term for Radulov. He'll be 36 at the end of the deal, and there will almost certainly be a decline in numbers over the last couple of years, but I doubt he becomes a boat anchor. His play depends on skill, not brute force, so even as he ages, he can still be effective. It's not like they gave him 7 or 8 years.

Stars mailbag

Honka is going to be exciting to watch this season. Ideally he’s going to be in a spot where he can learn from his mistakes early in the season, and he’ll have a nice safety net with a veteran defenseman in Dan Hamhuis.

Honka has long-term potential to be better than Klingberg. They are both offensively gifted, but Honka plays with more defensive edge and can actually dominate the game in all three zones, I’m still not confident Klingberg can reach that level as a 200-foot player.

The Stars are a better team with Julius Honka in the lineup, his roster spot shouldn’t be dependent on Nemeth or Oleksiak.

Watching a 2010 game with Lehtonen in net against the Isles. He was actually very good back then. He looks nothing like the Kari I've watched over the last few years. Wow.

Also, money will be worth nothing then and we'll all be living in a Mad Max style desert dystopia.

The real problem is year five. The trouble is going to be how much he's paid given his age and his trouble playing with four cup rings on his fingers from the previous four seasons.

https://blackoutdallas.com/2017/07/13/dallas-stars-official-review-stars-legend/

Our weekly Official Review series kicks off with a Dallas Stars hypothetical to consider: which Dallas legend would you bring back if at all possible?

I can't decide if I would bring back Zubov or Belfour. I want to say Zubov, but then you have Zubov, Klingberg, and Honka. Do you really need the same player on all three d pairs? If you bring back Belfour and dump Lehtonen, you have Belfour and Bishop. That might be the greatest goaltending tandem since Niemi and Lehtonen!

The correct answer is Hagman.

Zubov would improve the team the most. Jere would be an awesome choice as well given the PK woes.

He'd be a good second line center.

He'd be the Turgeon of this team behind Seguin and Spezza.

So Lindy, how do you feel about the Stars' offseason moves?

So apparently Val will finish out his contract with CSKA (and be eligible to play for Russia in the Olympics) and then rejoin the Stars in 2018.

No. He's not good enough to make the Stars either.
