Tanev to drop three spots then draft Heiskanen anyway is a pretty attractive play.

Well Vancouver has the 5th pick, if they can get a deal done for 3rd + something for 5+ Tanev. It allows Vancouver to even trade up to #1 to grab whoever they think is the best player in the draft, NJ can move back and get Makar (if that's indeed who they want). Stars can get their current roster help in Tanev and maybe still get Heiskanen (if Colorado doesn't take him).

That many defensemen? Meh. I'll just take a center. Thanks.

Looks like the material is going to be quite a bit different when you get a close look at it.

Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area:The Sharks are still deciding if they want to bring one or both back, and at what cost are they willing to go to. Thornton and Marleau will likely have other options.

Potential landing spots for Joe Thornton – Nashville Predators, Dallas Stars and Boston Bruins.

Edit: Since the Stars are interested in Brodin.

Can you imagine how many shorthanded chances we'd give up with Seguin, Spezza, Klingberg, and Thornton all on the ice at the same time?

And lord knows what this team needs is to get much older and slower.

Thornton would be awesome. Not saying he would be our top pair lord and savior, but I think he would improve the team.

They might have to get older and slower on the wing short-term.
Free agents
Oshie is going to be paid a lot of money.
Let's say if Thornton can no longer play C, he can slot in at wing. Who else is out there at wing? Jagr, Justin Williams (would be a good fit).
Otherwise could re-sign Sharp, who like Thornton may not be not be ready for the start of the season or re-sign Hemsky. Bring back Eaves, and pay him? That's not a good idea.

Vrbata hasn't had much success out of the Coyotes, Doan who knows if he's going to finally leave the Coyotes. Marleau?
Vanek? Iginla?
Drew Stafford

The trade market has options like Eberle, someone who might be available through Vegas.

I'd like Justin Williams for depth. And I would also like Thornton. He's a quality human. Eberle would be better than either, but Eakin won't be enough to get Eberle. Once the Vegas expansion shakes out we'll have a better clue of what's really possible.

I agree. He'd be more of a Carbonneau type of addition at this point in his career, but he's still a brilliant passer.

It was mentioned in the past week or two, a team who could protect a defenseman would be the team to trade for a Wild's defenseman, if they do trade one prior to the expansion draft. The Stars are one of the few teams with a protection slot open on defense.

Eberle it sounds like is going to be traded.

Then there was this, from a Edmonton writer.

Careful. Lots of Stars fans are sure the Stars are terrified of not having enough spots to protect their mamy underperforming d-men.

Why would Edmonton trade Eberle to us for Eakin? Even with Eberle's bad playoff performance, he's still better than Eakin.

He also makes $6MM per year and the Oilers have massive raises coming up for McDavid and Draisaitl.

He's also a pretty one-dimensional player.

There aren't too many dimensions that can contain his leadership though.

Do the Oilers have a coach that played with Eakin's dad?

Friedman on Eberle
Somebody had mentioned to me they heard a Dallas rumor yesterday, but that one got shot down to me when I looked into it

Stars Mailbag
Expansion draft
It’s likely going to be Cody Eakin, Dan Hamhuis (see next question), or Stephen Johns.

Defense
Jonas Brodin or Matt Dumba are the more realistic options from the Minnesota Wild, and that may play out sooner than we think. The Wild are crunched a bit by expansion, and they are looking to get a first-round pick, maybe the Stars could put together a package that includes a player No. 29 and a third-round pick.

Word is the numbers will be perforated like this:

Might increase the chances of the Stars acquiring Brodin, with the Wild's #1 target gone.

Sources say the Wild has received lots of interest in Brodin. The risk of not trading him before the freeze is that one of the interested parties could then swing a deal with Vegas to get Brodin if the Wild leaves him exposed and protects Dumba.

A number of NHL teams have shown interest in Brodin, including, it’s believed, Montreal, Tampa Bay, Dallas and Toronto. The Wild had been in trade talks with Tampa Bay about Drouin before he was dealt, and the Lightning is still seeking a defenseman.

The Wild has also had trade talks with Montreal regarding Alex Galchenyuk, but late Friday, a source close to the Canadiens was starting to doubt they would be able to acquire Brodin or Scandella, a Montreal native the Habs have also inquired about. The reason being, the source felt, was how complicated it would be for the Wild to add another forward needing to be protected. Also, trading Scandella would mean the Wild was still at risk of losing the exposed Brodin or Dumba in expansion unless the Wild knew it had a prearranged deal done with Vegas not to take the exposed defenseman.
