Spezza going from 33 goals to 12 is most of that drop.

However, from his career:

http://www.hockey-reference.com/players ... zja01.html

...it looks like Spezza has one amazing year, then takes the next one off, then has a great year, then mails it in again. So next season we should be good again!

So if Spezza scored at the same rate as last year, he should have 31 goals by now, which would be 19 more goals than he does have. The stars are 36 goals short of the pace the scored at last year. So he does for sure account for 53% of the shortfall of goals.

Shockingly it turns out that not having a number one center scoring goals is a detriment to the team. Well, I guess Seguin is a Center too (sometimes), but still.

The worst part to me is we all could tell this thing was broken a month into the season, and Nill did nothing. Not one move to try to improve the team. Not even change for the sake of change. All we got for months were excuses about injuries. It was the same players and same coaches up to the trade deadline.

What was going on? Did Nill not know what to do? Did he seriously believe two forwards being injured was the sole reason the whole team sucked? Did Gaglardi not allow Nill to fire any of the coaches?

Nill isn't a knee jerk kind of guy. We'll see if he let's Lindy walk in the offseason and if goaltending gets remade. Nill likely knew that letting the more experienced d-men go would set us back some, but no once could have thought the team would underperform this terribly.

I think Nill is a little too far to the other extreme sometimes, though. Knee-jerk reactions aren't typically helpful. But, neither is sitting on your hands and being too patient.

The Detroit Way is to be extremely patient with all decisions. That' why Detroit's top prospects never see the NHL until they're old enough to have grandkids.

I suspect big moves this summer, tho.

But, what big moves are there to make? Isn't the goalie market pretty shitty?

Lots of excellent available goalies, thanks to the expansion draft. Not just Bishop, but tons of quality young backups looking for a chance to be the #1 guy, like Darling, Grubauer, Raanta, Murray, even SJ's Dell. Teams can only protect one goalie (and most of their starters will take those slots, or have no-trade clauses that make them automatically protected), so lots of teams will be looking to make a trade (so as not to lose these guys for nothing), and with so many of them available, it's a buyer's market.

I'd rather chase one of those younger guys over Bishop, but given how Nill has not made one successful decision regarding goalies, I'm not getting my hopes up.

The Detroit Way may be an outdated model. Having no urgency to develop prospects is fine when you have Yzerman, Fedorov, Lidstrom, etc, and can fill out your roster with UFAs like Hull and Robitaille.

The Detroit Way is definitely proving to be outdated in today's salary cap league. It's fine to make sure a prospect is well seasoned, but the Detroit Way also included trading your top picks for instant gratification. Picking good players and developing them is all the rage.

We have a #1 center - Cody Eakin. Just look at how much Ruff uses him!

If Nill doesn't do something, I think any goodwill that's been built up since the team was sold is just gone.

In a season like this, the unlikely Cracknell Hattrick Night is a small gift. When he picked off that errant Dell pass up the ice we all knew that goal was going in, you could see it on his face.

Also Jason Dickinson called up, so the season is saved.

So this secret injury handcuffed us from trading him away at the deadline.
Let's nominate him for an award.

Great. They're going to need to structurally reinforce the home team bench.

Re: Sharp

It hasn't made a lot of sense to me that he has been playing at all since the deadline. If you're going to re-sign him, shut him down a month ago and give him that much more time to be fit for next season. If you aren't bringing him back, then Dickinson should've been up here a month ago.

Also, how many hip surgeries is that for this team in the last three years now? Like 8?

This is not 1999. Hitchcock's style is archaic in this era. Move the *f-bomb* on already.

The only retread I would be on board with is if Hurricane Witka is named head coach.

He's probably the best coach to implement what the Stars need. He'd be a short-term option. Not saying I'd want him back.

His .650 points percentage during his time in St. Louis with some combination of Alexander Steen (six seasons) or David Backes (five seasons) and Paul Stastny (three seasons) as his top two centers was second only to the Penguins' .655 with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin as theirs.

Does he even want to coach? I don't get the Hitch fascination. He went into this season with retirement on the mind.
