With the 60% to 100% rule, it seems like the most likely players to be taken would be Lehtonen, Niemi or Eakin.
When the draft occurs both Niemi or Lehtonen would have 1 year remaining.

The requirement to protect players with no-movement clauses, but that those players count against the list, is total bullshit.

I think it's fine. It is the only way to handle those clauses.

Or those players can just be exempt from the expansion draft without it counting to the list.

Sure, but then every guy signing a contract this summer will get a one-year NMC tacked on to keep them off the list.

Existing NMC's as of the date of the end of the 2015-2016 season.

Even so, I'm fine with the way they did it. If a team gave a player that kind of clause, the team is marrying the player for the full term of it. They can't trade or waive the player.

If they signed a contract forcing them to keep the guy on their roster, then forcing them to protect the player is a natural consequence. It best upholds the idea of the NMC.

I agree. I'm sure the union had some input on that part of the rules. Gives the player the benefit of the no-movement bargain they struck.

I'm not saying they shouldn't get the benefit of their NMC. I'm saying that teams shouldn't be forced to use up protection spots on players with NMCs - the NMC in the player's agreement should be sufficient in and of itself.

But if you don't force the team to protect the guy, then you are giving that team an extra spot to protect.

I know. That's a benefit to the team for committing to a player with a NMC.

I think forcing the team to protect the guy accomplishes the same thing. They committed to the player, so they're stuck with him.

Drop the Desert.

EDIT: Didn't realize the London Knights stuff.

Desert Knights just sounds convoluted to me. It should be a short, one-word name. Cocks.

Not sure why they aren't embracing the gambling motif.

Too bad the NHL refuses to televise it.

Smart move. It will generate more discussion, which is good for the game.

Hopefuly they decide to televise the draft. That'll make for great TV, because unlike the regular draft, most people are pretty familiar with their own team's actual players.

Colorado GM Joe Sakic thinks Semyon Varlamov is a key piece of the team, and is apparently ready to prove it.

According to BSN Denver’s Adrian Dater, the Avalanche are going to protect Varlamov at the upcoming expansion draft, meaning 24-year-old Calvin Pickard will be eligible to be selected by Las Vegas.

The move will undoubtedly raise eyebrows. Varlamov, who turns 29 later this month, has two years left on a five-year, $29.5 million deal. His $5.9M cap hit is the 12th highest among all goalies, but his numbers have taken a precipitous fall over the last few campaigns.

As great as Sakic was as a player, I am beginning to think he has no *fargin'* clue what he is doing up there in the executive office.

I don't see the issue there. Varlamov *fargin'* rocks.

I think the issue is that Colorado is not a competitive team at all. Varlamov belongs on a team that can contend now and the Avs could probably get some decent pieces for him.
