Zucc got lucky. No way a competent GM would have given him that 5 year deal.

Yeah. Would have loved to see Modano run that franchise into the ground.

It's already essentially in the ground.

I don’t think that’s a job you can do from a golf course in Arizona, so I’m not sure Mo would be interested.

The comedic gold that would be mined from butthurt Stars' fans if Modano got the job, though....

I don't really care that he's in Minnesota, personally. If Yzerman can GM the Lightning, Modano can do whatever the hell he does for the Wild. Who cares?

Chiarelli, Lombardi and Hextall are the main candidates. If their numb owner opts with the first one, it will be at least a decade of mysery for the franchise.

I hope they pick Chiarelli, so that we can get all of their great young players in lopsided trades.

In the Wild organisation, every player under 78 can be labelled as "young", which results in a very long list.

Then the word "great" comes, and all the concept falls apart.

The Wild job is going to be a strange one to hire for. Is the person taking the job under orders to try to win now? It sure seems to be the case given the massive amount of cap space they have tied up in guys over 30 for the next five or six seasons. I don't know how they try to do anything like a rebuild with those Parise, Suter, and Zuccarello contracts.

Even if you give the GM five years on the job, how much of a stamp can he really make on the team with those contracts in place? Anyone taking that job is doing so knowing they have no real chance of outliving the contracts that handicap them from day one.

And Hextall just got fired from a team for not moving fast enough, even though he was doing a really good job of being patient, building a prospect pool, and ensuring a solid future. Does he take a job where the owner won't permit a real rebuild as needed?

The Zucc contract wasn't smart. Zucc belongs on a contender that just needed an extra piece to put them over the top. The Wild are simply marginally more above average with Zucc now.

Any chance Fenton can become GM of the Blues?

Good read on Fenton's dismal 14 months in Minnesota. Strangely, not a single mention of Zucc and lizards:

At least he was assistant GM for awhile, but I still don't understand the logic of how a former NHL hockey player is the fast track for the GM position.

Didn't Modano and Guerin hate each other while he was a Star? I remember reading that a few times.

He's been an assistant for a while with successful teams. I don't see why his status as a former player who retired almost 10 years ago would negatively affect his potential GM qualifications.

I love all of the "low risk, high reward" talk. What reward? That if he goes out and has the best season of his career, he could get you 35 points?
