On defense, I'm predicting Hamhuis becomes the new whipping boy because he's the veteran free agent signing who isn't really all that great.

Personally, I'm predicting a Johns regression. He played pretty well, but he really only had about a 25 game sample size. If he turns out to not be all he's cracked up to be, all of a sudden our defense looks pretty damn bad.

That's a worry for sure. When you look at all of the young d-men the Stars have tried out over the past four or five seasons, how many have become real NHL players? Klingberg for sure has turned out very well. Jokipakka looks to have made it as a depth d-man on a bad team. Dillon has made it as a third pairing guy on a good team. Connauton has hung around as a #6/scratch on some bad teams.

But that's it, right? This hit rate is pretty awful.

For the sake of optimism, Johns has to break the trend to be a quality player. He has to.

Johns wasn't our draft pick, so that probably increases his odds of panning out.

Johns' case should be judged slightly differently, I think, because of the circumstances in how he was acquired. Depending on which side of the ledger you fall, he was either a throw-in with the trade that got him here or the coveted jewel necessary for the trade to happen in the first place.

Goaltending is the only fall guy you need. When you give up soft goals, it clearly demoralizes the forwards and makes it harder to score.

Or how about this: The other team can just sit back in a full trap the whole game because they don't need to work for goals.

That's a pretty good one, eh?

Niskanen was drafted 11 years ago, Mr. Quickly Aging Guy.

Our recent draft picks are all going to work out and it's going to be glorious.

Plus, Klingberg and Johns are going to be the new Pronger/Macinnis.

What if Jordie is actually elite, our goaltending is just so bad that it has been making him look bad?

So pretty much everyone is saying the Preds will win the division/conference/Cup despite their shitty submediocre Finnish goaltender:

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nhl-2016-1 ... 30334.html

I'm kindof wondering whether the Blues or Wild will make the playoffs at all, Boudreau be damned. Chicago probably takes a massive step back too. The Jets are a far, far better team than anyone seems to realize, and they just let their #1 boat anchor, Pavelec, walk.

I'd be really shocked if we run away with the division again. It all comes down to Koripkoski.

I think all the Central teams are going to be better, if that's possible. The Jets were pretty zippy in the pre-season, but ya know, pre season. Calgary should be better with Elliot b/c they do have a decent team. But, Gulutzan is their new coach, so it's a wash. :) kidding. Chicago was actually pretty crappy last year for a lot of the season and STL is still a great team. Nashville? I don't really know.

We have our work cut out. And no one will be surprised by us anymore.

I think the Blues took a big hit when Elliot left. He's been kindof the guy holding their *poo poo* together in the background (and constantly getting *poo poo* on by his own head coach) for half a decade. Jake Allen was annointed the Heir Apparent three years ago, but even behind a no-risk defense-first team like the Blues, he's only slightly better than average.

Chicago relied on an incredible season from Kane just to squeak in as the 5th seed. And Kane has never really approached those numbers before, so it's a question whether he can repeat it again. Especially as all of his teammates are getting older, and his and Toew's ridick contracts keep forcing the Hawks to sell off all their top young guys. They're still good, but we blew them out four times last season.

The Jets are the team to watch out for. No idea on the Avs, but anybody's got to be an upgrade over Roy, right?

The Hawks also had another glorious offseason full of shipping out all useful complimentary parts in order to stay under the cap. Their team now is essentially Kane, Toews, Keith, Hjalmarsson, and Crawford.

Elliott was a product of the Hitchcock's system, he was below average in the NHL prior to St Louis and I'd expect him to return to his below average form in Calgary. Blues offense will be better this year, with the gain of a few more skilled players, while losing some size and spares.

Is giving up 6 goals to Edmonton below his average form with the Blues? Curious.
