Can't believe how many people think Honka got the short end of the stick, or believe there has to be more to why he's not playing and getting demoted in practice groups.

I don’t get it. The guy has been given a lot of chances, and he’s done nothing with them.

What's one goal against the ultimate nothingness of being?

I think Honka may have some underlying talent. But, there's something about him that keeps it from coming out. I think it may be more psychological than lack of ability. He looks nervous and scared all the time, especially when the puck is on his stick.

Regardless of why, he hasn't shown the Stars any reason to put him on the ice and I'm glad they quit trying. Not only was he not improving, he was actually getting worse.

He's too small, and the Stars have finally accepted what they should have realized before drafting him.

I don’t think the Stars did him any development favors.

What part of his development was missing?

He got 3 seasons in the AHL to prepare for NHL play.
When he was up here last year, mean old Ken Hitchcock, who allegedly hates talented young superstars, give Honka a minute per game of PP ice time. He did not produce.

I get that, but he also yo-yo’ed around a lot. Plus, the Stars don’t really have a good development track record. Although I wonder how much of that is due to simply not having talented players to work with.

A minute a game of PP time last year = two 30 second shifts with Brett Ritchie.

So, Erskine must have been a passenger since neither driver was injured badly. I wonder which vehicle he was in.

Hearing that the injuries are not life-threatening but that's only comments on stories so not sure if that's accurate.

This is probably the best thread for a 99 review. Sturm is watching the games exactly as they happened this week 20 years ago, so I'm a little behind. The entire broadcast for every game is there, so if you have a lot of time to waste like I do, then feel free to join in. I'm only through game 1 so far. Thoughts:

-I don't feel like the players were that much shittier/slower/less talented than today. I thought it would be worse. It's more about pace of play. I feel like the guys in 99 could move pretty quickly when they had to, but the pace of place in general just wasn't as urgent as it is today.
-John Davidson is the worst. On one of the Buffalo goals: "You see here Dallas had a delayed penalty, so Dominik Hasek went to the bench, and Buffalo had six guys on the ice! Six guys! No way Dallas could handle that kind of disadvantage, so you can see how it led to the Buffalo goal."
-Speaking of pace of play, holy *poo poo* was everything slow back then. I'm not talking about skating, I'm talking about number of whistles and the time in between faceoffs. The time from the start of the video to the first TV timeout was like 35 minutes. The league has really streamlined on that front.
-There were like 17 blatant high sticking calls that got missed. I know this was before visors were a thing, but good lord, it was dangerous out there.
-literally every check in this game would be a penalty today. And the Stars still got like 10 power plays in Game 1. And some of the minor penalties that were called would be 2-year suspensions today.
-Speaking of, how was the Stars' power play so bad? You had Modano, Nieuwendyk, Hull, and Zubov, all more or less in their primes.
-This was not a good game for Belfour. I know he's canonized, but he only saw like 9 shots through the first two periods, and then almost every shot he saw after that went in.
-I've gotten on this soapbox before, but bring back the *Dang all Get out* two line pass rule. There was one whistle for a two line pass this entire game. You know what I didn't see a single time? Stretch pass>tip it in deep>change. I feel like that's an easy change that would improve the current game massively.

If you want to watch something even more ridiculous go back to the early 90’s. Even more? The 80’s. Etc.

Hockey is one sport where you can just watch classic games and see the athletes get more and more amazing over time. Did Gretzky get old or did the game catch up?

That’s why Jagr even at 55 points is an amazing story of longevity.

I contend that the truly great stickhandlers age better than the speedsters.

Wow, big year for the Stars.

Carbonneau getting in should offer some hope for other Selke winners like Jere.
