GM Joe's last rites; a stinking Red Wing to be hired

Postby Troy McClure » Sat Apr 27, 2013 6:33 pm

GM Joe to be fired.

@DarrenDreger All indications are the Dallas Stars are about to make a GM change. Detroit's Jim Nill expected to be named GM of Stars as early as Mon.
I got a ranch in downtown Dallas/I buy diamonds by the ton/Chase cuties in my Cadillac/Drill oil wells just for fun/But when it comes to boots, I need a deal/That will fit me right, toe to heel/So I get my boots at Western Warehouse.

I'd figured that the Lites Ilitch divorce had probably burned all bridges with Detroit. Guess not.

He was asked to take the Montreal job but declined for family reasons.

I wouldn't want to be GM of the Candiens either. Too much stress and media following the every move.

He also names Jason Botterill as a potential candidate.

We needs the guy from the Wings. That way Scuba has to cheer for the Stars.

This game/team sucks. Good riddance Joe.

If they didnt already have the successor named, I would have liked to make a joke wondering who from the 99 Cup team gets a crack at GM next.

So far this is all speculation with no evidence from Dreger.

John Shannon ‏@JSportsnet 16s Just got confirmation, Jim Nill is next GM in Dallas. Told that "they need a total culture change there".

Oh, OK then. In that case, rock on. I don't know anything about him, but he seems like a rockstar hire.

I like that he basically ran scouting and development.

If Nill needs a place to live, Morrow's house is for sale.

I still have next to no connection to these players. There isn't one guy they could trade that would make me sad.

It sucks that Nieuwendyk's legacy in Dallas has been tarnished by his time as a GM. I'll always love him for what he did as a Star on the ice, but I am so happy about this.

Not saying it means anything but Jim Nill knows assistant coach Curt Fraser really well. Fraser coached the Wings AHL team for a few years, before joining the Stars this season.

This is the main reason I'm very excited about this. Damn near everyone has had some direct ties to the past teams. About time to get something new in here.

Related to that, I saw an ad the other day for the Stars that showed the Cup win and my first thought was "*f-bomb* you, Dallas Stars, that was 13 years ago and a lot of playoffs ago. Stop rubbing it in."

I feel the same way. I never watch those games anymore. Maybe a long time from now when I get nostalgic or something, but I'm so tired of them living in the past.

Not to rain on the parade. It's still the same though. The organization is going to need to develop the talent for this team to be a legit contender again. Jim Nill isn't going to be any kind if saviour if that doesn't happen. Hopefully he can acquire some more players with high upside.

The real interesting part is Nill is the person who ran the draft for Detroit, basically he filled Les Jackson's role in Detroit. Running the draft and being the director of player development.
So let's say the reports Nill received from the Detroit scouts liked a certain player, but the Dallas scouts didn't it will be interesting to see what happens, on the draft rankings when they're made. So that'll be another advantage in this years draft. Usually it's in early or mid May when the NHL teams make up the draft board.

Except that Detroit's last good draft was a decade ago.

I feel bad for Newy, provided these rumors are true. The guy behind him gets a spend-y owner, a stocked minor league system and a team with a lot of good pieces already in place. Ah well, he won't be out of a job for long.

Alright, now I get it. Jim Nill sounds very similar to the name James Neal. Reversal of fortunes and an exorcising of demons or some *poo poo*.
