Elliotte Friedman mentioned the following today.

Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk was otherwise tight-lipped about it, but he did say they are trying to re-sign Jaromir Jagr. The goal is to keep, not trade him.

Pierre LeBrun mentioned the Stars and Jagr have begun contract talks and if he gets the right money he'll re-sign with the Stars. Sounds like this could get done soon.

If he wants to keep doing one-year deals, perfect.

One year deals are the way any aging NHL veteran should go. If he has to stop playing mid-season or is playing badly enough to warrant not signing again, he can opt out and not hurt the team.

I kind of like that about him.

But he also knows the power he yields. He is at 999 assists, and would become the 12th player in league history to hit 1,000. So on the bench Monday against Minnesota, he joked to linemate Eric Nystrom about getting open for a goal so Nystrom could get his name on the 1,000-assist plaque and be a part of history.

“He’s a hoot out there,” Nystrom said.

Asked Monday when he was going to give fans a post-goal salute — a tradition he has refrained from in Dallas — Jagr broke into a big smile, then walked away. He knows people want the salute, and he knows when he will give it.

But he doesn’t think you need to know. That might ruin the surprise.

I hope he re-signs. He's just pretty awesome all-around.

Is that joke funny because Nystrom is incapable of scoring this year?

When Jagr moved from Philadelphia to Dallas, the Stars were ready.

"He had a key," said one source who preferred not to be identified. "When you sign a guy like him, you let him do whatever he wants...For being a legend, he was great to work with."

Jagr

You probably only have six or seven years left, right?

“Six. It will be funny. In five years, you're going to be standing here. And I'm going to just tell you, 'I told you.' The same thing happened with the Rangers when I was 37. I told Glen Sather my dad told me. 'You're going to be in the best shape and you're going to be the strongest when you hit 40 just like I was.' That's what he told me. He said, 'If you're going to be like me, you're going to be the strongest when you're going to be 40. That's what I was.'

Jagr had 18 points in 20 games with the Panthers.

That would be awesome if he played that long actually and didn't suck.

Strength lasts a lot longer than speed , quickness and reflexes.

The dude has to be worth it just in jersey sales alone.
I got a ranch in downtown Dallas/I buy diamonds by the ton/Chase cuties in my Cadillac/Drill oil wells just for fun/But when it comes to boots, I need a deal/That will fit me right, toe to heel/So I get my boots at Western Warehouse.

I never wanted him to leave. He was pretty good while he was here and looks just as good now as he did then. My only potential issue is the speed factor. I don't think the Stars were nearly as fast in 12-13 as they are now.

In terms of advanced stats, he's somehow still one of the top 25-40 forwards in the league, even at age 76.

But he definitely doesn't get back on defense, and he's not fast, so the optics don't look as good as the actual results.

I contend the best place for him is a team with a struggling power play.

I really hope he goes to a contender at the deadline. Seriously. I'm sick of him rotting away on shitty teams. He needs one more cup before he finally quits.
