NHL Expansion in 2011?

Postby Stars99Lobo37 » Tue Jul 29, 2008 4:55 pm

Interesting blog I found while roaming the O Boards (I know. Don't kill me)

On the next page, there's a REALLY fascinating bit that isn't related directly to the main story here, but should be shouted from the rooftops anyway. Included in the Nashville Group's projection of the team financials going out to 2011-2012 is a footnote alongside the team revenue estimate for the 2010-2011 season which says, "Assumes a $15.0 million expansion fee received." Gentlemen, start your speculation! If 30 teams each received $15 million in expansion money, that represents $450 million paid to the league in full. That would seem to indicate that multiple teams are potentially coming over the NHL horizon, given the figures involved. Larry Brooks of the NY Post had a column last summer that estimated $450-500 million in expansion money if Kansas City and Las Vegas were to join the NHL club, so indeed, might we be looking at a 32-team NHL in 2011?

Rest can be read, here.

Kinda interesting if I do say so myself.

The Official Board is always a great source of humor and that's about it.
Heika's blog isn't that bad either for humor.

As far as the article I don't think it'll happen.

Like who?

Only team I would like moved, is Atlanta really. I gained too much respect for Pred fans when I went and visited there (though, I still hate them and their f'ing Tootoo whistles).

The league is the most watered down major sports league. Expansion is the worst idea ever. If anything i'm for folding teams.

Well the comments on his blogs are great for humor because of how stupid some of them are. I'm not a fan of Heika at all, if Tracey Myers would post on her blog more, she's alot better then Heika.

On the Boucher blog post the "DougArmstrong4" comment is hilarious.

Atlanta and Nashville.

i wouldn't be against moving Florida, Phoenix and Carolina either.

Florida I could see.

Phoenix has had nothing to work with and I really do believe they're moving in the right direction. Crowds were a lot bigger when their team was winning this season and for whatever reason, I think they can make it.

Carolina, eh I'm on the fence.

But what the hell. Anything to get Detroit to the East :D :D :D :D :D :D

I liked her as well. McClure has a crush on her, as I recall.

She's not that great on TV during intermission. (I almost said "between periods", but thought it would be too easy to derail the thread.)

100%. And if she could get a easier comment system. I hate that thing she has. But she has a much better blog IMO.

Move or contract any teams that can't make money on their own and require revenue sharing money to stay afloat. Revenue sharing is *fargin'* bullshit. You can't punish successful teams with a successful business model (like us) and reward teams that have either mismanaged themselves into the ground or never should have existed in the first place. *f-bomb* me harder.

Atlanta, Florida, and Nashville should all move.

One or maybe both of Seattle/Portland.

If Toronto would pull it's head out of it's ass, realizing that a team in Hamilton won't make Leafs fans change allegiances one should move to Canada.

The third can move to which ever of KC, Winnipeg, CT, or Vegas. Whichever makes the most sense. Though my prefrence would be both Seattle and Portland, thus Detroit could move East and Dallas can go to the Central division.

But yeah expansion is a horrible idea.

If ever a league needed to downsize, it's the NHL.

Two teams in Florida?
Three teams in California?

Jason, where would you move a team in Wisconsin? Milwaukee is the only city with the proper population and they are mighty close to Chicago. Would that work?

I don't think we can really question the three teams in California. Well outside of Anaheim, the other two have a very die hard fanbase.

Los Angeles still fills the building somehow and they've been losing for over 40 years now. San Jose, well we all know about Shark fans.

Anaheim....I totally agree with deserves to be questioned.

Maybe they don't have anything to work with because hockey doesn't belong there right now??? Its not a hockey city. Period.

Get rid of Anaheim, Phoenix, Flordia, Tampa, Carolina, Nashville, Columbus and Atlanta.

I'm not one of those Canadians who say everyone should be brought to Canada. But we could support another team in Southern Ontario, and there could be another team in Quebec.

I agree about Southern Ontario. I think a lot of people would love to see a Leaf alternative.

Vegas is also prime for a hockey team. Imagine what fun you could have in that city + NHL hockey.

the home team would always win because they'd be accustomed to the craziness. the road team would always be distracted and pooped from partying too hard.

They haven't had anything to work with because their team has sucked donkey balls for over a decade now.

They finally have youth and actually have a great goalie on their team now. The addition of Jokinen only makes them better (despite having no defense now).

I'm sorry but I don't think a decade is enough time to prove if a hockey market will succeed or not. Do you seriously think Dallas would be as stable as they are now, if they had the suckage that Phoenix has had?

If a team cannot be financially viable after years in a market, it's time to fold it up and move it.

The Stars made hockey work in Texas. Land of football and BBQ. If hockey can be succesful here, it can be anywhere.

If other teams cannot make it work, too bad, so sad.

Move to Canada.

I think a winning team had a lot to do that. We all know Dallas is a winning city.

When the Stars were on their run in 99 and 00, the Cowboys didn't make the playoffs the Mavs were still sucking and the Rangers well they still haven't even won a playoff game in their history. It made a huge difference IMO.

I can really see that happening in Phoenix. Nashville is a different story. They fans are like what we had at Reunion but there's just far too few of them.

Every team has great fans, every single one. But it's a numbers game.

Also, I think when guys like Ryder are getting such impressive contracts, it means the talent pool isn't as thick as it should be. Cut teams and you'll see that sort of nonsense go the wayside.

I just think Phoenix's best years since moving to Arizona are ahead of them and see no reason why they would move them right now.

Their buildings is one of the best in the league.

The Great One is coaching them.

They have great young talent.

They have an awesome goaltender.

Everything is coming together for them.

I honestly think the Coyotes sniffing the playoffs last year was a complete anomaly. They had a terrible defense, and then they traded away two of their only four NHL caliber defensemen. They'll still beat us several times because they always do, but I think they'll fall on their faces this year. Maybe even so badly that they finish behind LA.
