The NBA has been using player tracking for a while now, and the NHL is getting in on it. This kind of stuff is where real analytics starts to show up. Fans fell in love with corsi in recent years, but teams are miles beyond something that simple.

I like the very end where the goalie whips the puck out and the clear dots collect in the corner.

Wow. No wonder our team sucks. Bowness is using a Nintendo game to draw up his plays.

Seems like he's selecting 3 skinny guys and 1 fat guy. Definitely not a winning combo.

While I think The Athletic has declined in quality (and their site redesign is almost enough to make me quit using the site), these kinds of articles are great:

https://theathletic.com/2546910/2021/05 ... o-overpay/

To get to the root of the challenges the Blue Jackets have had retaining elite talent, The Athletic wanted to take a deep look inside the organization, not by talking to those who still work or play there — Blue Jackets fans hear from them all the time — but by talking to respected veterans who have recently worn the sweater and have seen the operation from the inside out.

We asked them about their perception of Columbus as a city, why they think the Blue Jackets keep losing players, what it’s like to play for coach John Tortorella, what it’s like to negotiate with the Blue Jackets, and what they’d change if they were running the club.

We had several stipulations to these interviews:

- the players would be granted full anonymity so that they could speak freely
- the players must have played in Columbus during the Kekalainen/Tortorella era
- the players needed to have played in multiple other cities during established NHL careers
- the players must have left the organization on good terms, with no ax to grind and no agendas

Two players we asked to participate politely declined. Three others agreed to talk, with the promise that their comments would be only lightly edited to avoid revealing their identities.

Player 2: Young kids would rather get drafted somewhere else. Maybe this is overgeneralizing, but a lot of the younger guys want to go where they’re rock stars — Toronto, New York, Boston. They want to go hang out with hot chicks in Miami and Arizona and L.A. They want to try to wheel girls in Montreal. That’s what they want to do. So there has to be some other draw that Columbus has, right? There has to be something else. “We have a great team and a great culture and we’ll pay you.” Or, “We really value this (aspect) in you and we want you to stay and we’ll make sure you stay no matter what the cost.”

When we talked contract it was, “Where do you want to be?” And we said “X” amount, they immediately said, “Nope, no chance.” And we were like, “Well, that’s where we’re at and there are like six other teams willing to go there.” They expected me to give up a ton of money to play there, like they were the only team in the league. When you’re a (restricted free agent) they play hard, hard, hardball, which is unfortunate, because then as soon as a guy gets a chance to get out there, he’s like “*f-bomb* this, I’m gone.” It’s tough to treat players as nothing more than assets and then try to get undying loyalty from them as people.

I'm willing to bet Columbus isn't the only team with this problem. Everyone wants to view themselves on the same level as the big markets, but the reality is that some places have zero incentive for players to go there.

I'm surprised at the level of delusion in their management, though. Aren't they aware that they have to create incentives since the city itself has none? Very stupid management on their part.

If Columbus disappeared from the league, no one would care just like no one cares that the Thrashers are gone.

For all the media talk about what a terrible person Tortorella is, almost every single player account (even anonymously) seems to indicate that they may not always like him, but that playing for him isn't awful.

Most surprising takeaway: NHL players think there are hot chicks in Arizona. Do they mean like, 'temperature' hot?

Really the only difference between Columbus and Dallas is that there are girls here.

They should just do what they do with goalies and pull people from the arena staff. That would be fun.

Ban him for life and move on. He’s a dude who likes trying to injure other players.

People were calling for a lifetime ban for the guy like seven suspensions ago. Just *fargin'* do it and move on.

The league had plenty of occasions to solve the problem, they didn't do *poo poo*. Suspensions and fines are not working. It's maybe time for the Caps organization to do something but we all know they won't. Final option, take Avery out of retirement and give him a free pass to apply his medicine. Twice harder.

Wilson hits to hurt, and he tries to hurt people as much as possible. Get him the hell out of the game.

https://theathletic.com/2566394/2021/05 ... y-with-it/

It starts with the man himself. What makes Wilson special — not good-special, necessarily, just a deviation from the norm — is an almost preternatural sense of the Department of Player Safety’s stomach capacity. That’s how he went 2 1/2 years (October 2018-March 2021) without getting in Real Trouble. It’s not because he fundamentally changed, it’s because he gained a greater sense of what the league would accept and the league met him in the middle.

Compare his act with prime Matt Cooke, or Raffi Torres. I watched plenty of the former; there were shifts when you could almost see his eyes glaze over. The outcomes tended to be similar. That has never seemed to be Wilson’s deal; he knows what he’s doing. He’s in control of himself. It’s not premeditation, on an “I’m going to concuss whoever on this shift” level. He has a knack for picking his spots and making the premeditation a little less obvious.

Bet on Wilson knowing all that. And bet on him sticking around — assuming he doesn’t do something dumb enough to get suspended over the Caps’ final four games. He’ll be in the lineup against the Islanders, or the Bruins, or the Penguins in the playoffs, being himself and trying to stay on the correct side of the dumbest line in sports. As you’re watching him, remember that the NHL wants him there. This is a feature, not a bug.

I don't see why other teams don't just beat the *poo poo* out of him. Especially this season when you play the same teams over and over again. 20 years ago, if a dirty player took liberties like that, someone kicked their ass at the next available opportunity, whether it was next shift or a game a month down the road. Now we just film "that was bad" videos and write Athletic articles and post them on twitter.
