No NMC? Welcome to the expansion draft exposure list Mr. Sekera.
I got a ranch in downtown Dallas/I buy diamonds by the ton/Chase cuties in my Cadillac/Drill oil wells just for fun/But when it comes to boots, I need a deal/That will fit me right, toe to heel/So I get my boots at Western Warehouse.

I think the two-year term is designed exactly so he can be exposed in the expansion draft, and I'm sure Sekera knows that. With the AAV where it is, he could either be (a) an attractive veteran presence for an expansion team, (b) an attractive trade candidate for a team needing a cheap, veteran D man (assuming he is still playing well, (c) an attractive 6th, 7th or 8th D for the Stars, or (d) a buyout candidate for Dallas after next year if he isn't taken in the expansion draft.
I wasn't really excited when I heard they re-signed him, but as long as it doesn't cost the team anyone they really want to keep, I think it is a low-risk move.

Seems like this means Johns isn't doing well. Hanley will be 7th D and Harley hopefully the 6th.

Yeah - I think that is a pretty good assumption. Johns is an interesting question mark though. If they didn't think he had a chance to play again in the the playoffs, I'm curious as to why he stayed in the bubble - maybe he was better off being around the team. Don't know and don't know enough to speculate. Hope he is ok. From a purely hockey standpoint, however, it seems the Stars can't count on him being in the lineup.

I didn't expect to have him back but this signature makes sense.

This seems fine. I think there are other, better options out there, but I don't know that any of them are significantly better without paying exponentially more.
This is basically the kind of deal that Nill should be signing for third-pair defensemen.
