Especially with Bishop being 36 when his contract runs out. There’s going to be a lot asked of Khudobin.

There’s no way both goalies are here for all three years. They’d have to dump one when Oettinger’s ELC is up. Although re-signing Dobby at all seems to indicate they aren’t all that confident in Oettinger.

Now we understand better the draft strategy. Having young guns to win games 11-9.

With the shortened season, we will need both goalies and maybe all three. It's not my money.

I don't like that third year, and I don't like that extra 0.5 since he got his extra term.

It should have been either 2 x 3.5 or 3 x 3.

They weren't going to put Oettinger in a situation where he is the starter next season. Though they might end up in that situation as both goalies coming off of surgery and who knows how effective they will be.

Crawford would have been a better option, but don't know what he's looking for and he is an risk with is concussion history.
Up next that leaves Greiss, or long shots who can put up quality numbers in the Stars system. It's those systems where any goalie can have success in if they can stop the easy shots.

At least the narrow vision of the front office thinking Khudobin was the reason for the team's playoff success, so they won't be able to improve the forwards at all, unless they plan on also trading away Radulov for nothing in return.

No, trading Radulov would give us less penalty kills. Also Khudobin's surgery isn't a big deal. I'm more worried about Bishop's health.

To some degree, I think there also has to be some of the front office rewarding a great performance and a good playoff run. Otherwise what message does it send to the players?

But the message has always been the same though:

"I like where our team is at."

Except for players also know it's business reaching the SCF means players will get paid, others will leave.
Khudobin playoffs weren't good, but their narrow way of thinking is saying it's Khudobin, not the team's system. He made the saves any average goalie makes (low quality shots, lots of them, so he posted high save %), he allowed bad goals (especially against Colorado and Tampa), was inconsistent. This is the type of signing a fringe team makes try to become a playoff contender, not win a Stanley Cup.

There are still many buy low options out there

Granlund is the most talented option who would add something different to the Stars roster, his value has dropped a lot with his play in Nashville.

Haula/Grabner

Alex Galchenyuk He's going to have to sign a cheap prove it deal somewhere.

Khudobin is being re-signed for more than his play, which has been very good for a back up and a lot more than just the playoff run. He is a great back up, which isn't always easy. He's a great guy, funny and loved by his mates. The team benefits too.

Granlund is a very skilled forward, but lacks of consistency. I also like Haula very much, one of the fastest skater in the league (Gurianov could finally find someone to pass the puck...) but he's also injury-prone. I pass on Grabner. Chucky on a 1-yr/$1M deal, why not but I think it's over for him in the NHL.

For what its worth:

https://theathletic.com/2127281/2020/10 ... e-tracker/

Considering the rest of the goaltending market, this is an absolute steal for Khudobin who stepped up big time for the Stars in the playoffs. For the past two years he’s been one of the league’s best goaltenders in terms of goals saved above expected and his save percentage climbed in lockstep with Dallas’ improved defence this past season. Even at 34-years-old, this is a great bet by the Stars.

I like the signing, but that and Sekera definitely mean that we're running the same guys and hoping for the same results. Which, ya know, sucked for long stretches of the season where we looked like rancid ass.

Khudobin’s contract includes a 4 team no trade clause for the first two seasons. I’ve never heard of this. He must clearly have four places he hates. Now I want to know which teams those are and why he hates them.

We’re gonna have a couple new youngsters, no matter how you slice it. Guri and Hintz should continue on an upward path. That’s the best we can hope for with cap straining anchors, Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin.

I think I like the Khudobin deal. For years, backup goaltending was a huge weakness. Khudobin isn't perfect, but he's damn good. And the Bishop / Khudobin tandem has been good for a while, so it's not a two-week fluke. I have concerns over that third year and whether or not he and Bishop can keep playing like they have been, but I'd rather gamble on known, more proven goalies than jump on the goalie merry-go-round AGAIN.

Does this mean he has to protected in the expansion draft?

No, just a full NTC or NMC.

From DeFranks article

"Nill said the Stars would watch how the free agency market unfolds in the next few weeks, though it is tough to see Dallas involved with any big deals.
“This may go on for three, four weeks,” Nill said. “It may take a while for this flat cap, the pandemic to really sink in. We’re just going to be monitoring as we go and keep an eye on everything.”

Nill mentioned how many big-name free agents are still available (Alex Pietrangelo, Torey Krug, Taylor Hall are a few), and how teams need to clear cap space (like Tampa Bay or Vegas), meaning that moves may be on the horizon that open opportunities for the Stars."

Need I remind everyone that our 1A is Ben Bishop? Need a solid 1B when your 1A is a China doll. Thems just the breaks.

He’s a pretty reliable defenseman who can also (I believe) play forward. He’s solid. If he’s inexpensive, it would be a good add.
