27. Jamie Benn on Rick Bowness: “He’s the best coach I’ve ever played for.”

Why is that?

“Great person who really cares about you. He’s fun.”

Benn pauses to chuckle a little.

“You hear him hooting and hollering… and you know outside of hockey he’s there for you.”

28. When the Stars re-convened for July training camp, Bowness tinkered with their offensive system.

“We put the first three days of our camp strictly on offence in terms of breakouts, in terms of net-front, weak-side D joining the rush, in terms of cycling the puck, using our D more, getting them rotating along the blue line. Those first three days we put a lot of work into our defence joining the rush, spending a little more time in the offensive zone. And, also, putting more pucks on the net…. We just want to do a little more with the puck, and hang onto it a bit longer.”

Only three times all season did they have three or more goals in a 6:30 span. They did it four times in five games during the Calgary and Colorado series.

I think the back-to-back is a combo of ending early and avoiding Sunday games.
I got a ranch in downtown Dallas/I buy diamonds by the ton/Chase cuties in my Cadillac/Drill oil wells just for fun/But when it comes to boots, I need a deal/That will fit me right, toe to heel/So I get my boots at Western Warehouse.

Bowness seems like a really nice dude.

That recording of bowness behind the bench During the playoffs made me like him a lot. Most coaches seem quieter.

I hope we face the loser of this series because they are clearly the inferior team.

No, only the movie clip Julie said the team watched before game five.

Here we go. There is one "avoid the NFL" back-to-back.

Buffalo Sabres
The easiest call on the list. The Stars are in a Stanley Cup Final? Sabres fans don’t just get to root against them, they get to wish every misery imaginable on them along the way. Oh, sorry, would that be over the line? That’s OK, it’s the Dallas Stars in the final, nobody notices when someone’s over the line.

Pick: Lightning

So they knocked on the first two doors to find teams that had already shot themselves in the head, and took credit for the murders. Then they actually murdered the person behind the third door, and Courtney Love’d it to frame it as a suicide. Now they’re about to open a door with one of those trip wire shotguns that kills whoever opens the door.

Maybe, but...I kind of don't care? Maybe they lucked into some wins, but no team since the 80's wins on pure talent. It takes some luck along the way, and the skill or wherewithal to capitalize on the chances when they're given to you.

I've got my issues with the team and Bowness and other stuff, but it really doesn't matter. Four more wins. That's it. With another four wins, Benn's contract doesn't look like such a bust, and the last 20 years don't feel quite as bitter.

I think an underrated factor also is Dallas being better at hockey than those 3 teams.

I agree Slaps, I do think that the Stanley Cup playoffs vs all other sports with a 5 or 7 game series involves the most luck. In most years the top seeds don't win it all. To many variables in hockey. The puck on the ice does strange things. And hopefully the puck on the ice continues to do strange things vs the Lightning.

There were plenty of years where the Stars were good enough to win, but not good enough (or whatever) to take advantage when luck gave them an opportunity. This year, they've seized those chances.

I don't know, guys. I think it might have to do with scoring more goals than their opponent on 12 independent occasions since the playoffs began. I know there's an advanced database on this somewhere, but I've lost the link.
