Then he should have demanded a trade out of there long ago.

San Jose Sharks:
2015-16 - Lost in Stanley Cup Finals
2017-18 - Lost in 2nd round (but should have made the Western Conference Finals)
2018-19 - Lost in Western Conference Finals

It's not like they haven't been good recently.

Thornton has been signing 1 year contracts for the past 3 seasons.

So we’ll be able to sign him in the offseason. Good.

He’s only 105 now, so he still has a couple good years left in him.

Like I said. He wasn't on any cup winning team during that time.

That's the big funny about playoff Joe. There was a stretch there were they were picked to win the Cup 3 years in a row. But they somehow have never have done it, despite always being pretty good.

The Dallas Stars were born the same season the Sharks first made the playoffs. For the sake of comparison, the Stars have played in 173 playoff games. The Sharks have played in 241. That’s a looooot more playoff hockey San Jose has enjoyed.

Both franchises pretty much started from scratch at the same time, but when the Gunds got away from Minnesota with their part of the former North Stars/Barons merger they also took like half of the North Stars team with them in the Bay area. On the other side, all started with the Modano draft and when Gainey took over the team, he capitalized on the 1991 Cinderella run, building brick by brick the team that won the Stanley Cup. When the Stars arrived in Dallas, they already had a good team.

In absolute and assumed good faith, the Sharks should be grateful to the Stars franchise for its success

That's why it's hilarious that Joe Thornton has no cups.

It's remarkable how they go two and three rounds deep more often than they miss the playoffs.

This is an interesting fan debate. Would you rather be a fan of the team with one Cup win followed by 25 years of mediocrity, or would you rather be a serious contender year after year even though your team never wins it?

I think it's pretty complicated. Actually I don't find constant playoff runs only to be kicked in the nuts at the end all that pleasurable for many years in a row. But, not making the playoffs for 25 years would be brutal. Making playoff runs sometimes though w/ a Cup win mixed in might be better.

But Christ have the Stars had a barren playoff cupboard since the Cup. Thev've only made it past the second round twice in the last 20 years.

Well the third round is a pretty big deal, but I'd definitely have liked to make more than 2 of those.

Excuse me, sir, but the Stars almost beat the eventual Cup winners last year, which is basically like winning the Cup with an asterisk (which seems to be a Stars thing).

Although one bounce away is a great running joke that I support, losing to the Cup champions in game 7 in NOT THE FIRST ROUND is an accomplishment and step forward not to be scoffed at. As Troy was mentioning, those kind of partial successes have been few and far between. And this season makes it appear it was no fluke and the Stars are actually a fairly competitive Western Conference team.

Tough question. I would say get a Cup even if is costs years of true sucking. Chicago were terrible for years before drafting Kane, Toews & Co. and then win three cups which is impressive in the post lock-out era.

However, I still think you maximize your chances by regularly making the playoffs, having a clear plan to this path built with experience. Cases like St. Louis last year remain the exception. Paradoxically, once you clinch a playoff spot, anything can happen (see LA, NJ) Then you have all others factors you don't control: falling on a Crosby/Kane/McDavid year in the draft when you rebuild for example. Winnipeg had a clear shot on the Cup during two seasons but the window brutally shut, like Nashville who had maybe a longer window.

About the Stars in the future, I see them being in the playoffs on a regular basis if they don't screw things up, but never as a true contender. Well, bold prediction for what it's worth...

You get to the worst part of the post-Hicks bankruptcy years. Those teams were cap floor teams and should have been landing the team top draft picks. Instead, they played far above they pay grade and kept the Stars from ever drafting better than 8th overall.

The Stars had their dark period and even fucked that up.

Agred. Being "pesky" ruined the future.

There's a decent chance that being outright terrible wouldn't have worked out either. I can think of a few examples. You just never know.

Oh, it's not a guarantee to land franchise changing superstars by any means, but it is sadly the best way to land franchise changing superstars.

It's also about making the right choices in the draft which always have its part of luck. Like picking Klingberg in the fifth round. But also avoiding this:

Pick any random year and it's very likely the Stars completed whiffed in the first round.
