We're gonna be wearing our Winter Classic threads tonight. I hope Perry gets suspended again.

Johns is scratched. Cogliano can go. 12 forwards and 6 d.

And Polak keeps getting promoted by Bowness. Now up with Lindell.

I want to see a Spezza vs. Comeau vs. Pavelski vs. Perry fastest skater race at intermission.

Could they finish a lap before the 12 minutes are up?

It was painful to see Hyman tear through our defense like that.

Going to need to score more than two goals tonight.

Shouldn’t be a problem as long as Jamie had a week off before this game.

And they lost. Bowness will never make this mistake again.

My first live game in the Monty/Bowness Era, courtesy of Wonko. Some thoughts:

Hanzal looked invisible out there.

Our first line had three (3) shifts where they looked like an NHL first line. Seguin is the weak link, tho Benn was also fairly invisible. Seguin's shot is tissue-soft, his skating is slow, and he loses puck battles. Hopefully he's injured, and not already in decline.

Pavelski's guy scored three of the four real goals against. Now, I know we're not paying him $7 mil to skate back and defend, but... what, exactly, are we paying him for? He never once set up in front of the net for a deflection. Kirivanta can do what Pavelski does at 1/10th of the cost. I know you guys were excited when we signed him, but if a coach is going to treat every $7 mil+ forward like a gritty fourth liner, it really doesn't matter who you sign over the summer.

In all fairness, Toronto looked pretty good. You can see why they're a Cup contender again now that Babcock is gone. They swarm, they pounce on mistakes. Their defense kinda sucks, tho, but with that forward group, at least they'll be entertaining in the playoffs.

Putting Sekera, Polak, and Pavelski on the ice all at the same time was rolling out the red carpet for Toronto. Somehow they failed to score, but...sheesh.

Hanzal was more noticeable than Perry.

It was an exciting game, at least. And 3 even strength goals. Hard to contain those leafs, though.

We've seen the same game, a kind of loss that you can deal with. Two teams pretty close but you can't always win by playing trailing hockey, especially against the talented Leafs that are in desperate need for points to enter the playoffs. Bad covering on the Leafs' first goal, unfortunate turnover by Oleksiak leading on the deflection goal. Heiskanen should definitely stop rushing on the offensive zone when Pavelski or Perry are there with him.

ToddM wrote:Pavelski's guy scored three of the four real goals against. Now, I know we're not paying him $7 mil to skate back and defend, but... what, exactly, are we paying him for?

For smiling at the refs when he takes a Pavelskiing penalty in the offensive zone? No wait, his face-off percentage. Well, 54%. Damn, another miss. 50 games, 8 goals, less than 20 points. 20 freakin' points. On pace for 31 at the end of the regular season. If at least he could only be a one-dimensional player, but no. He's a zero-dimensional one. No offense, no defense, nothing. Just a useless cone. It's boring to hammer the same nail over and over, but I'm just not capable anymore. And I really doubt things will get better the next two seasons. Let's squeeze our asses and wait till' it's over and move on.

Now I will take my pills.

The Pavelski failure I put on a mix of coaching and the rest of the roster. He’s been slow for years, but he’s still scored a lot of goals. Very few of his goals are deflections, despite that being his claim to fame. Mostly, he’s scored by cleaning up garbage in front of the net or by being set up by his teammates.

Then, he comes to Dallas and his goal scoring dries up overnight. Something about the Stars (both PP and 5v5) fails to generate many scoring chances for Pavelski. Maybe the Sharks were better coached. Maybe the Sharks have better playmakers. Either way, he’s been a bad fit here. A surprisingly bad fit.

If I think of which players are playmakers on the team, I think it's only really Radulov, Klingberg, and Miro. Maybe Seguin too, but he's not a full driver of play.

It seems Pavelski is just a bad fit to the system they want to run, which they should have known before signing him.
