1/9 Stars @ Ducks - Perry's press box homecoming

Postby Troy McClure » Thu Jan 09, 2020 10:56 am

The Stars are currently on a five game series against some of the worst teams in the league. They entered the new year playing Nashville, Detroit, LA, Anaheim, and San Jose. The schedule doesn't get any easier than this.
I got a ranch in downtown Dallas/I buy diamonds by the ton/Chase cuties in my Cadillac/Drill oil wells just for fun/But when it comes to boots, I need a deal/That will fit me right, toe to heel/So I get my boots at Western Warehouse.

But they are also supposed to win these games. There was a long stretch where they didn't win games that they "should have" won - they played down to their opponent.

It is worrisome that they only won 2-1, though.

It happens to everyone sometimes because even the bad teams have a few great players that can finish. But it was happening to us too often in the past.

I'm not complaining. Stashing garbage points away is a key to making the playoffs. They're on pace for 97.8 points (http://moneypuck.com/predictions.htm), so if they sweep this run of five bad teams, they can squeeze 10.2% of their points from 6.1% of their games and end up with 86+% likelihood of making the playoffs.

It was probably the dullest game of the season last night, and according to the announcer L.A. had installed a neutral zone trap to stop the bleeding. They didn't seem eager to give it up even after we got the lead for quite some time, and the Stars -- who are smarter now than they used to be -- didn't seem eager to take risks getting through it once they had a lead. So blah.

Despite that, there were a couple of great chances in that 3rd.

I thought the Stars didn't sit back even with 5 or so minutes to go. They weren't taking dumb chances, but they continued to work at possession and were not letting the Kings have the puck.

They will fatally drop one or two games against bottom teams while upsetting top teams. Even if Anaheim and San Jose suck right now, coming from California with 4 points over 6 would be acceptable.

Then there's another tough trip to Colorado even if Stars are undefeated against the Avs and a very interesting game at home vs. the hot Leafs. Minnesota and Buffalo are must-wins.

Oh absolutely. I just was amazed that they didn't take risks trying to force passes and were willing to carry and protect the puck.

At times over the last few months, I can hardly believe how differently this team plays from the one a few years ago. Especially the way they exit the defensive zone.

86% likelihood my ass. We are 4 points ahead of 9th place right now.

I was especially amused by how amazing our PK looked with Polak in the box. I don't know what Razor said ("...it'll be tough with one of Dallas' top PKers in the sin bin," probably), but the LA announcers said like four times how LA was absolutely unable to even enter the zone for that two minute stretch.

Fortunately Bowness had Polak out there for the mad scramble in the final two minutes, to keep the puck around our net and make things interesting.

Did Kiviranta turn the puck over every single time he touched it last night like he did in his first game? I didn't watch.

Man, Anaheim is terrible. This is the first time in ages I feel like we've come out and truly looked superior.

Nice to see that Bishop got an assist on that outlet pass to Seguin.

Stars are 8-0-1 without Klingberg.
