Denis isn't capable of scoring straight on. He has to be coming down the side. He's not Roope.

I’m officially irritated the Stars can’t score a 3rd goal.

Good to see Benn providing some much needed consistency during this turbulent time.

Two is the minimum of plural. Anything past that is a Bowness goal ...

This third period has absolutely sapped all of the cautious optimism created by the first two periods,
and I am even more skeptical and demoralized than when I first heard the news.

If we really wanted to emulate the Blues we would have promoted Stevens, who is our equivalent of Berube, i.e. a POS goon.

Thank you, Bishop. What a garbage win against a miserable team. Just hire Zubov and be done with it.

Well it was about as good a defensive game as I’ve ever seen. New Jersey as a team had half as many scoring chances as Gurianov. I would liked to have seen another one go in though.

Sometimes it's actually hard to get a lot in when the other team can't mount an attack and just stays in front of their own net all game.

Solid game all around. Watching the game, you wouldn’t even notice a change. Same lines, same pairs, same juggling as they got a little stale, same 0 for power play. Similar ice time distribution. Maybe Guri got a little more because he deserved it.

It's the same story against terrible teams. You score two early goals, you think you will roll on them and win 56-0 and then you fall asleep, other teams try discreetly to put some pucks in your net while you are buzzed and not aware of anything. In fact it'a kind of rape.

I don't hate him. In fact, I feel very sorry for him and especially his family. Though true, I never warmed up to him, I wanted to like him. I always pay special attention to coaches, and have opinions.

He had a very brusque manner. After I watched the Bowness post-game conference last night, I realized the contrast was pretty startling.

That was pretty much a good first game for a new coach though. He didn't have to make any adjustments or hard decisions.

New Jersey sucks. I was at the game and man, they are bad. So that was a good first team to play against.

Pass. We don't need another guy on the wrong side of his prime years. Unless we can trade Benn for him.

Taylor Hall is past his prime now? *poo poo*. They burn out early these days. I just figured his main affliction was playing for New Jersey.

He's probably still in it, but on the way out. Prime years are now basically 24-28, but I'm sure Al can get actual stats on that.

You're still in your choice years though. We don't really have any elite data crunchers here, so we'll roll you out first.

Hall turned 28 last month. That means the team signing him this summer to an eight-year deal will get all of 1.2 seasons from Hall while Hall is still in his 20s.

To the question about when a player leaves his prime, here's a list of the ages of the current top 20 players on the points list:
23
24
24
31 - Marchand
23
23
30 - Carlson
26
28
24
31 - Kane
22
19
34 - Ovechkin
21
25
26
26
25
26

I put the names of the guys who are 30+ to highlight the fact those "old" guys who are still scoring among the league leaders are all Hall of Fame caliber players. Taylor Hall has been a good player over the course of his career, but he's never been on the level of those older players. So what some GM is going to do is give Hall a top ten cap hit to get top 50 (hopefully) production.

And it's not like me picking the top 20 was a cute cut off. Only five of the next 20 on the list are 30+.

This is a very different game from when most of us started watching in the 90s where rapid expansion allowed a lot of older players to hang around longer and keep playing big roles putting up points. Speed is a bigger part of the game now than probably ever, and it shows up when you look at the league leaders in recent seasons compared to back in the clutching and grabbing era.

Defensemen still skew older than forwards. Top 20 scoring ages for defensemen:

32
31
29
27
30
29
31
30
32
29
32
32
33
30
32
29
32
33
31
26

However, your list again shows how it is a young man's game and if a forward prospect hasn't "made it" by their mid 20's, they probably never will. Also that it's probably best not to sign a guy who is 28 to an eight year contract and top dollar.
