He'll be captain of the Texas Stars in no time.

Per Shapiro, he looked awesome tonight. The real test is if he wakes up headache-free. If so, the Stars could really use him.

In what way? They seem to be doing pretty well without him.

Pushing Polak or Sekera to the press box is always a good thing.

Is it? Messing with the #1 defensive unit in the NHL to add a guy who hasn’t played in two years seems a little suspect.

Good news gang, Jamie Benn has broken into the top 200 in league scoring.

They need a better partner for Heiskanen, one with more puck-moving ability.

Stars getting national recognition:

https://theathletic.com/1530407/2020/01 ... cap-court/

Jamie Benn, Stars

The details: He’s in Year 3 of an eight-year deal that carries a $9.5 million cap hit.

The case that it’s a bad contract: You rarely hear Benn’s deal mentioned among the league’s worst, at least outside certain Stars fan circles, and even those that do mention it will often add the caveat that it’s fine for right now. But is it? Even though he signed back in 2016, Benn is currently tied for the league’s fifth-highest cap hit among wingers, trailing only Artemi Panarin, Mitch Marner, Patrick Kane and (barely) Alexander Ovechkin. Each of those players has over 40 points this year, while Benn has only barely cracked 20.

Slumps happen, and even occasionally last half a season. But this is Year 2 of Benn’s slide, after a disappointing 2018-19 that saw him post just 56 points. Offense isn’t everything, but it’s what got Benn his big deal – he signed a year after winning the Art Ross, when he was coming off back-to-back 80-point seasons. Those days suddenly seem like they’re long past.

The case that it might be OK: Benn is a physical player and the Stars’ captain, so he’s not just about goals and points. And even last year’s numbers weren’t that bad, since he still managed a respectable 27 goals. More importantly, the Stars are on the way to another playoff appearance, something they didn’t manage in his Art Ross year, and Benn has always been a strong postseason performer (including 10 points in two rounds last year). Once he snaps out of his funk and a rising cap lifts Taylor Hall and a few more wingers past him on the overall list, this deal should look manageable.

Key comparisons: If we’re calling witnesses, Jim Lites might have a thing or two to say. But in terms of comparables, the most damning might be Nikita Kucherov, who signed an identical 8-year, $9.5 AAV deal after a 100-point season and then won the MVP right after. Mark Stone has the same deal too, and he’s a far better player. On the other hand, Jeff Skinner’s is also eight years and just a bit under the dollars ($9 million AAV), and you could argue that Benn has a better overall resume and has at least been able to stay healthy.

The verdict: Benn is 30, which means we shouldn’t assume he’s hit the wall and will never be a top producer again, but also can’t rule it out. It’s also worth mentioning that his deal would be tough to buy out, with all but $1 million a season coming in signing bonuses after this year, and also contains a full no-movement clause. I still like him as a player, but even going on four years after he signed, the very best wingers in the game are still settling for similar deals or less. And Benn isn’t one of the best wingers anymore. It’s a bad contract.

He was overly nice (I thought) and clearly doesn't watch many Stars games.

Yeah, it’s a very bad contract if you just look at the stats vs. the money, but it’s even worse if you actually watch the games.

I love the Puck Soup guys, but they watch exactly two Stars games a season each -- when their favorite teams play the Stars. It's a podcast done by a Leafs fan, Bruins fan, and Devils fan, which I enjoy because I'd probably get bored of hearing about the Stars considering how closely I already follow this team.

I enjoy hearing their takes on the Stars because it's not the team-filtered sycophants that always say nice things.

The problem with all national news on a local sports team is that they know about 3% as much about the team as just the average fan of that team.

Average fans are *fargin'* morons though, so the difference in intelligence and the difference in firsthand knowledge of the team probably net out to even.

What I do enjoy from national media is their indifference about the depth players local fans think are super amazing all because of how the team-employed broadcasters have talked these players up.

I'm not sure I enjoy that all that much. It feels like all they do is suck the biggest name player on any team's dick, when there's like an 80 percent chance all they'll do is score one assist on the power play in any given game.

But you gotta talk bout somebody I guess.

He and Laviolette are tons better than Bowness.

Bowness certainly did better than either of those two so far this season, although he does have Jamie Benn.

My Two cents here:

Confirming the interim coach for the season remainder does not prevent talks to be done with the newly fired ones like Laviolette or Gallant. Moreover, it's been stated that Bowness will step back at the end of the season, no matter what. I'm sure that the Stars front-office already started discussions about that and probed their potential interests, eventually lock the future coach the next days/weeks even if it's for the next season.

Hynes found an immediate position elsewhere but it's possible that both Laviolette and/or Gallant do not necessary want to go behind the bench right now and want to take some time to see their options.

Gallant would be a nice consolation prize if Bowness is not retained. He was my first choice when we T Gags hired Hitch, but LV snagged him.
