On the other hand we are the 10th best team in the league,
And if we beat the Habs on Tuesday we'll have 84 point in 70 games, which is exactly the same record as the Pens who now lead the Metro ...

So ... WTF?

I'm pretty sure this Central Division pressure has finally gotten to me.
Imagine missing out on the playoffs while still being a top 15 team in the league? It's very very doable.

This is partially the league's fault with their wild card nonsense.

The Stars really should be a mid-tier playoff team at around 5th in the conference or so. Instead, the shitty pacific division teams are technically ahead of them because they lead their shitty division, forcing the Stars into what is really the 7th seed as the top wild card team.

I do realize the Stars are better than most other teams, but I guess I see them as still quite a bit behind the really good teams like Nashville, Tampa, Winnipeg, and probably even Pittsburgh. Maybe the team can find another gear in the playoffs and get on a run, which they are good enough to do. It just seems very unlikely that will happen.

There are a few really good teams and then a bunch of mediocre to good teams. There will be at least 3 teams in the West that won’t make the playoffs that are probably as good or as bad as the Stars. The Stars could be one of those teams on the outside, easily. There’s just not a lot of difference between about 8 or 9 teams in the West this season. There are two really good teams in Nash and Win. And I guess Vegas.

Just making the playoffs is good enough this season.

This team deserves to miss the playoffs. Unfortunately they'll end up making it because all the other teams suck.

Has anyone else noticed how bad Lindell is at offense? He is a momentum killer when he touches the puck in the offensive zone. I'm really baffled why he gets any PP time at all.

He used to score at a fairly decent clip, back in Dec. or whatever. Like a point every other game.

Well who else are they going to put out there besides Klingberg and Johns? As they're not playing Honka. Methot, Hamhuis and Pateryn?
Lindell is better offensively then he has shown, Hamhuis would be the next best choice. Methot and Pateryn are horrible passing wise, Pateryn can sometimes shoot, but doesn't mean its going to be on net.

If this team gets better passing in the lineup on defense, they'll be better offensively.

Yeah, I don’t agree with his take at all. Spezza earned his reduced role and fewer PP minutes.

Looks like the tent from the horse show that passed through Fridco a couple of years ago is in Montreal... yes, in fact, google confirms that’s the same show.

Hey, remember at the trade deadline when some really good depth scoring options were available and literally only one team made an offer for Evander Kane, but Nill liked where the Stars were at and apparently didn’t think a third-rounder and a random body from the AHL was worth trading?

That’s worked out well. Good times.

Even though Evander Kane isn't that great, I think this should cost Nill his job this summer.

I for one am glad Nill held on to that 3rd rounder. A 3rd rounder could turn out to be anything, it could even be a boat.

The only player available who could move the needle on this team would have been Karlsson. Kane wouldn't have made any impact on this squad whatsoever.

That said, I'd wager Nill will make an offseason push for Karlsson. He does most of his damage in the summer.

Considering the owner said the same thing they weren't going to do anything at the deadline. This team is a complete work in progress, they can't even play the best lineup, each game, it's a complete waste to help it out further. This team needs to add players with term left, not for a few weeks.

That's assuming he is still the GM. But, it's probably a safe assumption since, as Jason pointed out, the owner agreed with him at the deadline.

It's not like we're Tampa, who is one decent penalty killer and maybe a backup goalie away from being essentially invincible. Why waste assets on a mediocre season?

Yay. Another season of being the off-season winners. That working out so well for us. We’ve got all of one playoff round won in a decade to show for Nill’s “summer damage.”

I honestly don’t care who he should have targeted, but he should have done something. Maroon, Kane, Hoffman - too many good secondary scoring options were available for a team that desperately needs secondary scoring. I use Kane because Nill never made an offer, which is inexcusable for a team like this.

Would it have made us Cup champions? Nope, probably not. Would it have helped us get into the playoffs and perhaps have some success? Pretty likely. And I have to say, I don’t give two shits about a third round pick. I care about watching the Stars in playoff hockey.

At this point, I’m ready for Nill to go.

Holding assets has gotten us one playoff round win in ten years. Perhaps it’s time to go ahead and waste some assets.

Trading for the sake of trading is probably the worst thing a GM can do. See: George McPhee trading Forsberg for Erat. Or McPhee trading a 1st , 2nd, and 3rd for Tomas Tatar. (Why?)

Maroon is a product of Connor McDavid. Are we also getting McDavid thrown into the deal? No? Then hard pass.
Kane sucks. Maybe he's got some talent, but how great can he be if none of his teams want him around for more than a season or two? Pass.
Hoffman I'm totally in on. But he'd have cost a fuckload, probably. Allegedly some GMs inquired, and the price was ridick. (Temporary) pass.

Who else is worth it who was available? Rick Nash? Nash wasn't even an upgrade over Ryan Spooner, much less the other four pieces he went for. McDonough? Damaged goods... who needs another Hanzal?

This trade deadline was a dud. None of the available players were really all that good. It'd be like going to an expensive restaurant that you hate, and paying two or three times the menu price for some kale dish that you hate, all because you're in the restaurant anyways and everyone else is ordering *poo poo*.

There's plenty to complain about with Nill, but acquiring some mediocre player in his mid-30s who peaked in 2008 for 20 games isn't one of them.

You're arguing that a team that cannot score - they just failed to score on a 6-on-3 power play with significant time - is better off for not having taken a chance on doing something different and bringing in someone with some potential.

What happens if you put Maroon with Seguin? Seguin isn't McDavid, but he's a top-10 player in the league, maybe top 5. Maroon went for a 3rd and some guy no one has ever heard of. How is that not worth a chance? If it doesn't work out, it's not exactly a franchise altering trade.

Vanek went for two guys that could have been picked up on waivers. Vanek isn't going to save the franchise either, but he can score a few goals. It appears that literally any warm body would have been sufficient to acquire Vanek.

Kane is enormously skilled - he apparently has attitude issues. He wouldn't be my first choice, but the Sharks picked him up for very little. He could suck, and that happens, but Seguin had attitude issues, too.

Hartman, Statsny, Plekanec - there were plenty of choices out there who could bring something to the Stars. But taking a pass on doing anything for no apparent reason is throwing in the towel on the season. And I'm pretty sick of not even making it to the playoffs. Yes, it's cliche, but if you get in, something could happen - a few lucky bounces here and there. But you have to get in first, and this team is spiraling downward and scoring at less than two goals a game for some time.

I would be fine with them doing nothing and holding on to the assets they have, except that our drafting has been mostly *poo poo*. So the assets we hold on to suck. That's not a better long term play by any means.

It's like Troy always says... You are deciding to keep magic beans instead of get a proven player. I'm not saying to go blow picks on stupid trades, but they'd have been way better off trading any of their past first round picks for some kind of 2nd line scorer. That's of course in retrospect.

Seems like we’d need more than a few extra goals for this team to make the playoffs. Could Nill have traded for some fortitude? Was any gut available? How much for a little desperation? Would trading Ritchie have got that done?
